This is a prime example as to why you should not simply "give" people something they had no stake in building. It is also the prime example as to why we have a housing mess in this country that will probably get worse and effect ALL of us - even us who pay our mortgages- for a long time.
It gets down to this- no matter if you are a TV show, a relative or a lender, if you GIVE a person something, usually they will not appreciate it or take care of it the same way they will by earning it by their own sweat. When a bank gives a 100% loan on a house and the people that move in put not a cent of their own sweat into buying it, it is easy for them to neglect it and walk away from it. If they had to put 5% or even 10% down on it, you would not have this problem. People appreciate more what they have had to sweat for. I am all for "helping" people but there is a difference between "helping" and "giving". People should have a personal stake in the lives they live!
