Organized crime and the gambling/casino business have often been assocaited with each other historically but is this really still the case? When my friend came back from Las Vegas he said that he sensed that the Mafia still ran things in the casino and that the city is still run by the Mob.

That goes contray with everything in the news and the history books. Most of the casino resorts in Las Vegas and other cities are owned by major legitimate corporations, including Hilton, Marriott, and MGM. Do people actually believe Marriott is in cohorts with the Mafia? I also don't think Donald Trump is involved in organized crime. With legalized gambling isn't everything a legitimate business now? Now a lot of casinos at racetracks are owned by state governments and there are also of course hundreds of Indian casinos across the country.

Is there really still an organized crime connection to casino gaming?

Legal corporations doing business in an industry traditionally run by illegal entities. Sure, they keep books and pay taxes, but the result of half a century of mafia influence takes a while to eliminate. Let's just say that I wouldn't want to get caught counting cards - especially at one of the smaller places...

From what I have read, the mob is mostly out of directly dealing with the casinos and have more moved into smaller gambling establishments and infiltrating the unions of the major casinos.

The old scam was that the families would pick a businessman who was successful enough that it wouldn't be completely unbelievable that he would get a large loan, but not big enough that it would be likely. The mob would get one of its connected labor unions (usually the Teamsters) to give individual a loan. In exchange for becoming wealthier than he ever imagined, the businessman would agree to be the paper owner of the casino and turn a blind eye to anything the mob does in the establishment. The mob would use the casino to give friends, family members, and other useful people jobs and the heads of the Midwestern families also would skim the casino as well. The mob doesn't care, it's not like they own the casino and the owner doesn't care because he wouldn't have a casino without the mob and the creditors don't care because the loan was just the cost of doing business and casinos (even ones that are being stolen from left and right) rarely go broke.
