My husband was listening to a talk radio show on Sirius at lunch today and they were discussing the bailout. A caller proposed an idea that sounds good to me but of course it would never fly with Washington or be taken seriously in the real world.
Give 1 million dollars to every US citizen. Why not better to put $$ in the hands of citizens?
If each person had a million dollars-that could be used to buy or pay off the so-called bad mortgages, invest, etc. and we Americans could spend/invest ourselves to prosperity. Of course with our politicians something like this would never be proposed but I thought it was an interesting idea.
I am not for any type of bailout or giving $$ away- I just thought the caller's proposition makes as much sense as what politicians on both sides of the aisle are trying to push through.

Reason: messed up
I know there are more than 300 million people here-just using a round number.
I realize this would never happen in the real world and I certainly know there are more aspects than just cutting million dollar checks and I know that there are other economics to take into account. However a 2 or 3 trillion dollar bailout which includes bailing out the rest of the world is not exactly what I call ideal either.
No, 300 million dollars would give 1 million to 300 people. Only.
You are correct!
I still think it is an interesting idea to discuss while not something that would be done in the real world. Why not put the $$ in the hands of the people instead of the corporations who helped get us into this mess or to a foreign country.
Again I am really not for any bailout or even for giving every citizen a million bucks but if we are going to give away the farm, I would prefer to have some control as to how the $$ is spent.

me too. Alas, the world is too crooked and self serving to ever do the right thing, only the profitable thing. If we spent the trillions of dollars the gov has been spending on BS like this and war, ect. on our country's infrastructure, the arts or space exploration, imagine how different our lives would be. I could have been painting pictures of martian lanscapes in person for my summer vacation instead of waiting in line for 2 hours for my kids to get their picture taken with mickey mouse!
Would it be cheaper to just pay-off all the bad loans?
Of course but that will not happen. I guess that was kind of my point in that there are probably many ways to handle this situation that would be cheaper and make more sense and not end up costing us a few trillion. They can yell 700 billion from the roof tops but any government estimate they give will be at least double or triple of the price tag they initially give us.
