The violence in Mosul occurs despite U.S.-Iraqi operations launched over the summer aimed at routing al-Qaida in Iraq and other insurgents from remaining strongholds north of the capital.

I thought al-Quida was not in Iraq? mmmmm

It was not there before the Iraq war started. You can thank Bush for creating its training grounds.

Wait for it Tigerlilly: here it comes, wait, wait:

"Quit believing the facts, you people are stuck in the 'reality based' world".

George Bush, Dick Cheney, John McCain and "Gidget with a gun" all say the surge has done everything but turn water into wine. How dare you contradict them.

In some areas they have been the only game in town for almost 2 years.

An increasingly one sided thing.

Run a search on:

"The Strongest Tribe" by Bing West.

Lots of reviews and extracts at :
www.amazon.com

Don't buy it , just check out the reviews.

Oh, give me a break! And give it a rest!
How is it that Al Qaeda was all over the world; but, not in Iraq!

You'll have a hard time making that argumen, especially when you can do a search and find that there is credible evedence that there were Al Qaeda in Iraq.

Maybe , maybe not.
That training has a seriously high attrition rate.

According to sources like Michael Weir of CNN, the main reason why the surge has worked, if it has, is that the half a million Sunnis that made up the Iraqi army before our invasion, and were told that they would be part of the peace keeping effort, but were not called to duty, have since been called to duty, and are now on the U.S. payroll, to the tune of about 500 dollars US per man per month.

I was against invading Iraq. I never believed Saddam had WMD's or was an imminent danger. But a lot of Iraqis supported the invasion, at first, then for a while, as they hated Saddam more than we did after living under his tyranny for all those years. I still believe that if our intentions had been honorable, we could have established a democracy there. All people want to live in freedom. But when your intentions are not honorable, as I believe this administration's were not then how can you be effective? By accident?

I'm sure that there are soldiers on this board, either still deployed or were, and I can imagine, trying to anyway, how you must feel if you have come to the conclusion that this war was unnecessary and mishandled. I have nothing but admiration and empathy for you, all of you, whether you are still there or are now home and trying to put your lives together, while at the same time rationalizing your service. To put everything you had on the line, to have done it in good faith, only to come to believe that you were lied to, if in fact you have or you will, will probably be the challenge of your life. But I have to believe if you are struggling with this, as I know from the reports I've read and interviews I've seen that some of you are, that if you can face it, you will be all the bigger for it, and will have your best shot at healing and going beyond.
