From what I know and understand about Middle East politics, which I don't claim to be an expert, having Mubarak's government in power has been good for Israel. Egypt and Israel have a working relationship. They don't seem to be friends, but they also don't seem to be enemies.

I think that could all change if some type of revolution takes place in Egypt. Mubarak's government had peace with Israel even though the Egyptian people don't support Israel and it seems like a large number of them don't support the Jewish state even being in existence in the Middle East.

This whole Egypt situation seems really up in the air and I'm not sure what stance I support the US taking. A democratic wave sweeping the Middle East could mean big trouble for Israel and US interests in the region.

What do y'all think about the situation?

I think that Mubarak might be replaced by a worse government of the likes that Iran has. It could very well be not, but considering the track record of Islamic countries, chances are ripe for an Islamic regime to take over

That's what I'm getting at. Do we support a corrupt dictator who was a stabilizing force in the region? Or do we roll the dice and possibly end up with a hard line Islamic nation hell bent on taking Israel out?

Why do you think we will end up with a hard line Islamic nation? The people demonstrating in Egypt have nothing in common with islamic extremists. Actually the majority of these people are pro-western and pro-democracy. It's not like you're automatically a mad suicide-bomber just because you're a muslim, you know

What of the people in those counties we seek to meddle in?
Are they not entitled to the same right of self-determination as we are?

Look at what installing the Shah led to in Iran.

Don't be so naive.

Muslim Brotherhood Joins the Fray
The government crackdown is responding to the Muslim Brotherhood's announcement on Thursday that it will join Friday's demonstration. The Brotherhood is Egypt's largest opposition group, and its participation gives the counter-government rallies new strength.

One Brotherhood leader told reporters on Thursday, “Tomorrow is going to be the day of the intifada.” He predicted that many of the Brotherhood's younger members, some as young as 15, would take part in Friday's demonstrations.

I hate to break it to you, but Mubarak's government will look like a bleeding-heart liberal love fest compared to whatever emerges from a democratic Egypt.

The Russian Revolution wasn't started by communists but they were the most organized sub group. The Brown Shorts took advantage or Germany's turmoil. Toppling a gov't can have unexpected consequences.
