This is simply a resumption of the weak, whimpering foreign policies of Carter and Clinton. We are still paying the price for Carter's treatment of the Shah of Iran and the chaos that followed. Then we had Clinton's wining and dining of Yasser Arafat. In fact, Arafat was the most frequent visitor to the Clinton white house other than the women. Now we have Obama and Hillbillary giving $900 million to Hamas. The Democrats will never give unwavering and total support to Israel, our only true ally in the Middle East.

I don't see anything wrong with reaching out to the Iranian PEOPLE, which is what I think the President did. The Iranian people are a decent bunch in general; their friggin' leaders are wacko though. Perhaps a message like this, and the Iranian leader's rebuke of said message will encourage the Iranian people to make some changes in their government.

YouTube - Obama's Norouz Message to Iran

I think it makes us look weak and groveling. Why is Obama praising Iran when they are on the state sponsored terror list? Makes no sense. Some of the follow-up comments from Iran seem disturbing:

Iran demands change in US policy:
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said he had seen no change in America's attitude or policy, singling out US support for Israel and sanctions against Iran.

BBC NEWS | Middle East | Iran demands change in US policy

"Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has said Iran would welcome talks with the U.S. _ but only if there was mutual respect. Iranian officials have said that means the U.S. needs to stop accusing Iran of seeking to build nuclear weapons and supporting terrorism, charges Tehran has denied.

Iranian Response To Obama: "Minor Changes Will Not End The Differences"

But maybe a different path to the one we have been taking is needed....what do others think?

I don't beleive it makes us look weak.. We've proven we can already pummel the hell of out countries.. strong arming hasn't worked.

However, open lines of dialogue to forge some sort of relatinoship going forward is smart and commands respect. It shows that while we CAN bomb the hell out of you THAT is NOT what we really want.

I'm proud of our attempts to be the bigger, better nation by working toward peace.. we all know that weapons and strongarming only creates more tension adn resentment.

Yes peace and love with a terrorist country like Iran. Yes that always works. Love and Peace.

You know what.. why do you have to be sarcastic. What we've been doing hasn't worked so far. Perhaps if we try a little diplomacy they may stop with their terrorist ways.. if we show that we PLAN on respecting them when they respect everyone else, they may want that respect rather than the disdain.

It doesn't hurt to try.

Study the history of the Iranian regimes, how their religion has been used against them to think that all but them are infidels.

This president is taking a canary to a dog fight just like Carter. The doctrine of Carter is ignorant and stupid. Trying it twice is treason.
We are not Canaries, we are Eagles.

Eagles soar free, Canaries sing a song of regret.

Iran will never accept any kind of peace or truce until we stop supporting Israel.

Hasn't worked so far? What country do you live in? We have the terrorists surrounded.
You don't think that we really set up bases in Iraq and Afghanistan to just go after Al Qaeda and Saddam, do you?

We are there for the war of wars, the end game.

Iran makes nukes, Israel bombs them, Iran bombs Saudi oil fields, Russia comes down and takes out Israel... game OVER.

Set your Tivo or DVR, it's gonna get interesting.

No .. it hasn't worked..they haven't stopped their terrorist ways. All we've done is make them angrier.. they are full of hate.. the more we bomb them, the more they hate us.

are you willing to stay over inthat region for the rest of time? Do you think this country can continue to spill American blood and money unexhausted??

The INSTANT we pull out or drawn down, they will rise again.. this time angrier and even MORE hostile than they were before.

I don't agree with the Palestinian peoples METHODS.. but perhaps if they were ever shown some respect rather than be kicked out of their homes to begin with , they wouldnt' have resorted to such tactics. BOTH SIDES are wrong.. EVERYONE needs to find a level of MUTUAL respect in order for anything to ever be solved.

If you think what we are doing in the middle east is "working" you are sadly mistaken.

The message was to the Iranian people, not the Iranian government.

Smart move, IMO. If you want Iran to change, reaching out to its people (in this case, by recognizing an ancient tradition) is far more effective than...oh...I dunno...threatening to blow them to smithereens.
