I say they do.

Take America. Our country was started essentially so conservatives start anew; so they could establsih new conservative rules to their liking: weak central government, no federal income tax. freedom to worship, and freedom to bear arms. They were escaping an all powerful central government (a hallmark of liberalism) unjust taxes on the wealthy, and restrictions on how they worship.

What we've seen are slow erosions of all freedoms, an income tax which started at 1% and was promised to NEVER increase, and a dependent class much the same as Europe had.

I think the reasons societies deteriorate is it's always the easist course to buy votes by creating dependent classes. Giving away other people's money as Democrats do takes NO courage. Reversing reductions of liberties is almost unheard of, especially when one party demonizes the other for "wanting to take away (fill in the blank) welfare, social security, and soon to be universal health care.

Eventually politicians figure out, as the Roman leaders did in the waning days of their empire, that when you can get more than half the people not paying taxes, your side is in power forever (or at least until the country fades as a superpower). The majority will never vote themselves to become taxpayers when they formerly were not. Right now in America 40% of the people pay no taxes. Obama figures to jump that percentage higher. We are well on the way to the magic 50% tipping point. Once we get there, America will no longer be the preeminent superpower. Someone will overtake us who has modeled themselves from the way America USED to be.

It will take great courage and skill to undo the destructive path Obama is greasing.

Corporatism, fundamental flaws that arose that are entrenched in the foundations of capitalism, and lack of regulation caused the need for the more recent leanings towards socialism. It's a systemic problem.

All the little things: income tax, progressive tax, etc. are all minutia in the big picture.

I find it ironic that, 2 months in, you're implying the inevitable fall of Obama. He was handed a country with 2 misguided wars that are failing more by the day, a recession of epidemic proportions, and a country that has the lowest approval rating for Washington in the history of The Republic. Even if you yourself are a conservative and believe the bailout was wrong, and that President Obama will largely fail, to not mention the resounding failure of the Bush presidency implies partisan hackery. Bush spent more money than any democrat would ever have the balls to even consider.

I don't know about you, but I'm not hoping for failure.

Some of the founding fathers believed that society can fall to a level of decadence that makes it unfit for self-government. John Adams said the new government was for a moral people, or words to that effect.

No! I think they evolve to a form of "enlighted self interest" that prevents both extreme poverty and exteme wealth. . .
this will never happen with either pure socialism or with pure capatilism, but instead, with a form of enlighted oversight of capatilism. . . a step I most earnestly hope we are moving towards right now!

"Take America."

Let's.

"Our country was started essentially so conservatives start anew;"

The entire concept of conservative vs liberal is such a misnomer when discussing 18th Century political thought through 21st Century dogma.

"weak central government, no federal income tax. freedom to worship, and freedom to bear arms."

Accept that they rejected the idea of a weak central government when they rejected the Articles of Confederation for the Constitution. The issue of federal income taxes wasn't even an issue in a economy where few of the citizens depending on "income" for a living and as the testimony in Heller amply demonstrated there were indeed a number of restrictions on the bearing of arms.

The rest is just a jumble of incomprehensible rants with little basis in historical facts.

Once a group of people discover they can vote themselves more money and handouts, it is inevitable.

Our country was actually started by liberals who distrusted the conservative crown government in England.

It's funny how Puritans (Plymouth) and participants in a business venture (Jamestown) are suddenly liberals when it serves an argument. Any other time these groups are the liberals anti-Christs.

Unfortunately, the word "socialism" has been hijacked by right-wingers who just want to use the word to try and scare people. They don't even understand what true socialism is about.

They're showing that they simply repeat what they hear without even understanding what it is they're saying.
