What are the other choices, from which it is to be removed?
I think it is intended to include such people as Bushmen from Southwest Aftica, or Aborigines from Australia, or Malagasies from Madagascar, which do not fall correctly within any of the other designations.
The Census Bureau is not in the business of creating or enforcing political correctness. It counts people.
I've read that they're considering to remove "Some other race". Do you think they should keep it up or have it removed?
IMHO, statistics shuldn't be open to political correctness.
Considering that so much demographical statistics rely on the US Census, it should be as inclusive as possible, including putting back the religion question as well.

No complaints against the Census Bureau--at present.
Not so sure about what 'is being done' with the data and if I knew I know I would be outraged.

On my knees--let anyone capable of critical thinking do it. And let others learn to think and/or keep their mouths shut.
As a baseball sabermetrician and a history buff, I am of the opinion that it is always better to have more statistical data than you think you need, rather than less. It is excruciatingly difficult to go back and retrieve it later, when you wish you had it for historical purposes. They can ask anything they like, and I hope valid information is forthcoming.
The Census Bureau is maybe the only government agency that I trust to behave honorably with the information they gather. Without that trust, they would cease to exist, so I expect them to continue to honor it. They probably will cease to exist anyway, now the conservative have learned how easy it is to Acorn-ize somebody on some trivial pretext.
