The LA Times is reporting that the dems may not need 60 votes to pass healthcare reform. Dems closed in a deal today to push through legislation that would require only 51 votes to pass healthcare legislation. With 58 dems, we don't need a single GOP Vote. The Dems may not even need the blue dogs. Democrats may maneuver around GOP filibuster on healthcare legislation - Los Angeles Times
While it would be much more desirable to have bipartisan support on healthcare reform, if Republicans are going to be stubborn and vote along party lines, with no intent to compromise, I'm glad the Dems will consider reconciliation. Healthcare reform is too important an issue to deal with Republicans filibustering and screwing around. It needs to pass, and if the only way to do it is to fast-track it through, so be it.
Although I am a republican, I agree we need healthcare reform and some form of UHC.
Having said that if the dems go out on their own and try and jam this thru they are maiking a big mistake. Real reform will require sacrifice from multiple stakeholders, including patients - AKA voters. The dems will have every downside to the reform hung around their necks like a rock if they go it alone.
Its the voters GOPers should be worried about. Like in 1993, they will do their best to see the bill is defeated. Losing it doesn't help them at all, politically (besides, their lobbyists would be mad as hell).

April 24 (Bloomberg) -- Democrats reached a tentative agreement to use a parliamentary procedure that would prevent Senate Republicans from blocking President Barack Obama’s proposed overhaul of the nation’s health care system, congressional aides said.
The agreement calls for the same procedure, known as reconciliation, to be used to try to pass Obama’s proposal to cut federal subsidies to private providers of student loans, the aides said today.

Who is going to pay for it? We are all ready trillions of dollars in debt and now the IRS is collecting less tax revenue due to job outsourcing, huge lay offs and poor consumer spending. Talk about adding insult to injury.
Healthcare is 17% of the GDP of the US and they only want to debate 35 hours on the bill and a simple majority. Power Grab is all this is.
Sorry, but when one side won't participate in legislation on an issue that the majority of Americans want, what else can be done? All the GOP wants to do is obstruct this. They aren't playing nice.
I say go for it. Americans will cheer. And if there are problems, we'll have to fix them later.
