you need a link to see where the US ranks in education internationally? I believe we are around 18th. google it. I also believe that only switzerland spends more on education. don't get me started on how overpaid and spoiled teachers can be. I can't think of any other part time job that starts at such a high salary right out of college.
I agree 1000% - the public teachers (and their powerful union) have gone crazy in the past 25 years... they are overcompensated and over-benefited - they only work an 8 month year - and all they do is complain - continuously...

I have family members in public education - and sometimes I just feel like telling them to 'quit your griping'...

Where we need to be spending more is on HIGHER eduction - college.... That is where we are falling flat on our faces as a nation.. College is already out of the reach of many (they basically have to join the military to get college benefits) - and the situation is only getting worse...

Japan and China both swamp us in the number of Engineers and Scientists they graduate...

That may not sound serious - but in 10-20 years - it will condemn us to a non-competitive economic status and will hurt the economy noticeably.

my question is this. can anyone give me an example of instance where we threw money at an existing problem and it actually worked?
Education, Defense, Industry, Social Services/Welfare.

Countless others.

The government is good at solving problems when it has a clear goal with a specific plan that includes benchmarks and reviews.

The goal must be clearly defined like build bridge at W, nuclear plant at X, defeat enemy Y, or fund research to technology Z (ex: atom bomb and Manhattan project). The criteria of a clearly defined goal is very important. You can't just say "more money for schools" or "more money for healthcare" or "more money for roads."

Once the goal is established, then the politicians and lawyers need to get out of the way and let the engineers and scientists do the work.

You know why the military is usually pretty good at getting things done? The military is not run by a bunch of lawyers.
