This is recent example of atrocities committed in Sri-Lanka, with hundreds of civilian victims, including children.
Sri Lanka artillery barrage kills 378, doctor says (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090510/ap_on_re_as/as_sri_lanka_civil_war - broken link)
I imagine that if US or Israel were behind such attack, the media and forums like this, would have been flooded with thousands of protesting posts, expressing rage, bashing US and/or Israel. Horror pics would flood the internet, not to speak about Youtube clips.
However, since it took place in Sri-Lanka, these news are mostly ignored or posted in the back pages. Tomorrow it will be totally forgotten.
Why the double standard?

It was on my front page when I opened my computer this morning...more important things were on the front page of my newspaper ...so?

I hardly think those attacks are being ignored...but as far as I'm concerned there's enough in the U.S. to keep my attention.

Don't mean to sound uncaring but this sort of crap is happening all over the world....I am NOT going into a rage over it...

Yes Nancy, I totally agree. Personally, I don't know the Sri-Lankan situation well enough to express any opinion, aside from sadness.
I brought this example just to show how innocent people suffer all over the world, but the question was why some violent incidents draw so much attention, while others pass almost unnoticed.

It was on the front page of most of the news sites I vist... I have no idea what you mean about the coverage being different if the US or Israel were behind the attack... can you give examples? If you are talking about the invasion in Gaza, I think the ME is just a more important region to US interests so that's why it would garner attention... just like attacks in Afghanistan, Iraq and Pakistan.

Because the US and Israel do it with my money. I'm an American, if I don't say something about it I'm complicit. I don't apologize for not knowing much or saying much about Sri Lanka.

I saw the story earlier today, and yes, it bothers me that such horrors happen. Maybe someone will bring this up at the next POTUS news conference, but I doubt we'll hear much about it, either from the right or the left. It took a fair amount of public pressure to get Clinton to step into the Bosnia genocide to try and stop it. I'm not sure if we still have a small force there or not. I don't see any chance that the U.N., other group or nation will step in to stop more attacks.
