(Reuters) NEW YORK - Militants and hate groups increasingly use social networking sites such as Facebook, MySpace and YouTube as propaganda tools to recruit new members, according to a report by the Simon Wiesenthal Center.

The report released on Wednesday noted a 25 percent rise in the past year in the number of "problematic" social networking groups on the Internet.

The report was based on "over 10,000 problematic Web sites, social networking groups, portals, blogs, chat rooms, videos and hate games on the Internet which promote racial violence, anti-semitism, homophobia, hate music and terrorism."

To me, this is almost a non-story. Yes, there are hate groups out there, and it's no surprise that they're using the internet to recruit, but they have a right to organize and express their views just as much as anybody else. If a violent act is committed, then it should be prosecuted, but speech should not be banned (and in my opinion, that includes sexually-oriented speech as well).

Hate groups on the internet? Good golly, Miss Molly...the next thing you know, they'll want to march down the main street in your city or town.

Case-by-case basis. Its a private company, correct?

Plus any idiots dumb enough to join said hate-group should know that any future employer could easily check their account.

Whatever the private company wants to do. It shouldn't be legislated.

Myspace already bans people who dare express pride in being white. Although i think they have cut back quite a bit from doing it. I have managed to keep my account there for over a year now.

To ban free speech in any form would be a direct affront to the First Amendment. Absolutely they should not be banned nor their rights abridged.

I personally don't mind a bit if the hate groups get together to talk about people they look down on, whether it involves race, gender, region, age, religious persuasion (or lack thereof), sexual orientation - whatever. I really don't mind.

Of course, I wouldn't mind either if a strong tornado picked all the bigoted bastards up from their keyboards and dropped them off somewhere in the South Pacific directly over the Marianas Trench, or simply hauled them away to outer space. Really. I wouldn't mind a bit. I'm easy.
