It is partially true that the president of iran does not yield that much power, although it is not that simple. The previous president, Khatami froze the nuclear program for a few years until amadijad came to power, as soon as he was elected he started up the nuclear program and curtailed many of the freedoms given to the young in khatami's time. However, the ultimate power does remain in ayatolloh khaminie's hands.
In the day to day operation of the country the President is actually running the government. The role is almost like a Prime Minister in many countries. It is when the Ayatollah doesn't agree with the President when is his real power is demonstrated as he can usurp the decision of the President. Plus there is the pressure on the President to understand and follow the 'expectations' of the Ayatollah.
