An armed society is a polite society.

An armed man is a citizen; an unarmed man is a subject.

What part of "shall not be infringed" don't they get?

The 2nd Amendment is not just about hunting and sports.

The 2nd Amendment is there in case all the other ones are ignored!

...just a few random thoughts this afternoon!

Keep handguns legal, but limit people to only buying 1-2 clips of handgun ammo a year. If you need more than that for self-defense you should stop associating with whoever it is you're associating with, or start hauling around your shotgun, or maybe there could be a system where you could get another clip or two if you can prove you fired off all two clips in self-defense. If you need practice then go to a firing range, get some ammo, shoot it off, but you can't take it out with you. The Second Amendment guarantees a right to bear arms, not a right to secretly bear small arms that didn't exist at the time the constitution was written.

Easy enough to get around:

Either buy bullet making machinery or make sure your handguns take 'long gun' shells as in .22's, etc.

Let's not re-write the Constitution now. It says what it says and means what it means. Nothing in it says anything about "secretly" bearing arms or anything like that. It doesn't mention computers in reference to the 1st Ammendment either, does it?

Where does it stop? Do people have a constitutional right to bear bazookas, rocket launchers and hand grenades? Chemical weapons? Nuclear bombs?

Responding to this again:

Let's see... I'd say:

Outlaw the construction (for private use) of handguns that use long gun ammo, but people can keep their own if they already have them... my plan would definitely create a bigger black market for handgun bullets, but the prices would be higher so people would still be more likely to conserve, you know? Gangbangers and the like'd be less economically inclined to just shoot off their guns randomly, for fun, which would mean fewer people being hit by stray bullets, and firefights would end faster.

Then again, the black market could create its own problems, similar to the problems created by the black market for drugs... it'd suck to have people shooting each other WITH bullets, OVER bullets... do you think that would happen? Maybe it would. I still think I have a good idea, but it would take a very smart person to adequately weigh the pros against the cons.

As one of thie resident liberals I would like to say that gun control is absolutely necessary.

If you cannot control the gun you are using you are a danger to yourself and anyone around you. The essence of gun control is simply having the judgment to select a legitimate target and the skill to hit it with the first shot.

I believe that a well-armed and trained (shooting lessons and shooting sports should be taught in high school) society is a safer society even counting the accidents and domestic violence casualties associated with owning firearms. For instance random robberies, car jacking and home break in are greatly reduced in places where the criminals have a reasonable expectation that they might get shot and killed for their criminality. A judge may be lenient but a .45 cal bullet is not and the armed homeowner or mugging or rape victim is not likely to have much sympathy for his assailant.

We have been taught that killing another human is a grave sin and must be surrounded with much ritual and allowable only by government execution. Experiencing a war will teach you otherwise and let you realize that anyone threatening your life has surrendered his or her right to remain alive. The fundamental and brutal truth of defending yourself and anyone you are responsible for.
