Please don't get offended. I don't think idahogie was challenging your opinion as much as he was challenging the basis for your opinion, much as I did when I posted about how much research I had done on Sotomayor to arrive at my opinion. Idahogie could have been much more tactful, but really, please don't take offense. You said yourself how these threads sometimes get heated and emotional.

Of course your opinion is as good as anyone else's. But when we disagree, we all try to support our opinions. Idahogie, I think, was trying to challenge you to provide more information about how you formed that opinion, which I am interested in as well. I think there's a lot of information available on Sotomayor, so it flummoxes me that we keep on ending up back on a quote from a speech several years old.

One of the reasons I post on this forum is to be challenged. I have learned a lot on these forums by having others show me a point of view that I may have not thought of, making me take a step back and come back with a different outlook on the subject. I think that makes me a better person. But when I feel attacked, I become defensive just like anyone else. Deliberately trying to belittle someone, or trying to make them feel stupid just pi**es them off, and they no longer care about the point you're trying to make. Then it becomes a series of jabs back and forth, trying to see how much you can insult the other person while trying to prove your point, and that's the point where you have a bunch of angry people getting nowhere.

That's why I tell people to debate the argument, not to attack the credibility of each other. It's an anonymous forum, attacking each other's credibility is a dead end.

Sam Alito, a current conservative member of the Supreme Court had a 100% reversal rate. Did that disqualify him?
