The LESS THAN 1% of the US Budget spent annually on the space program has down countless numbers of things to improve life on this planet....

During the Apollo mission, LBJ was quoted to say that since we reached the moon in 8 years, it should be no problem to reach Mars by 2000.

Skeptics say that if we continue space flights, we should use robots. Man can be used to fix problems, like on Hubble if need be.

It would take 1 year round trip to Mars and back for a human.

With the country in such dire straits, funding NASA is not going to be a priority for a while.
Unmanned is the way to go. Although an actual human setting foot on alien planets has a far more dramatic effect, human biology is far too delicate for extended space travel. Send self-replicating drones and intelligent robots for the most bang for your buck.

And it is too ignorant of them to open their eyes and look around and see the benefits.

Just as the US Air Force is moving to unmanned drones to fight in wars, it is probably best and less expensive actually, to let robots do the dangerous work.

The dramatic effect of putting a "human being" on the moon and beating the Russians at their game, gave the Apollo program all the support they needed.

If there is no more drama, then I think the support for the space program will dwindle...as will the money.

we aint heeding the advice of the 'terminator series" are we??

Methinks there is some subliminal message in Stanley Kubrik's 2001: A Space Odyssey identifying and linking the Apollo 11 hogwash

maybe its the monkey jerking off at the start

Yes...not wise for any species to have all of its' eggs in one basket! We will need to expand our presence in the solar system and then the galaxy if "man" is going to survive and thrive!

We can accomplish ALL of the benefits that are associated with technological breakthroughs in Space WITHOUT having to send probes to Venus, Mars etc.
We can concentrate on unmanned satellites, early warning systems and defensive technologies Without spending huge sums on manned flights.
Use NASA to develop all of the things that we need to help America combat nuclear war or study Earth instead of studying dead planets that will not show us anything worthwhile.
Has no one yet learned that winning can be costly. WW2 should have shown us all that the Countries that lost WW2 have developed beyond America and the allies footed the bill. Japan and Germany are prime examples. Iraq will be the next example.
There was a great film made years ago called "The mouse that roared". Watch it as it shows what happens when you take on the mantle of Victors.
