If Obama wants to reduce our dependence on oil, he should look at hemp.
In the US, this plant has been made out to be the same as marijuana, but hemp only has a THC content (the substance that gets you high) of 0.05%, while marijuana's THC count is between 3-20%.
the government owns 90 million acres of farmland, where the government pays farmers not to grow crops. On a portion of this area alone, enough hemp could be grown to replace the use of fossil fuels and trees.
every part of the hemp plant can be used by humans from the root to the stalk, the leaf, the flower, the seeds the pollen and even the resin. Some other uses for hemp are charcoal, tars, methane and other flammable gasses that could help heat homes, for cooking and for the generation of electricity.
hemp has been found to reduce the intra-ocular pressure that causes blindness in glaucoma victims more safely and effectively than any other remedy.
hemp was being billed as a Billion Dollar crop that could build products from dynamite to plastics. Henry Ford built the body of an automobile from hemp-based plastics in 1941. Hemp plastic could withstand ten times the impact without denting that regular plastics could. Where is that technology today? Perhaps it's with all the other technologies that could reduce our dependence on foreign oils. In the ownership of the car and gas companies.
H.R. 1009 Would Give States Right to Regulate Farming of Versatile Hemp Crop"
WASHINGTON, DC - For the second time since the federal government outlawed hemp farming in the United States, a federal bill has been introduced that would remove restrictions on the cultivation of non-psychoactive industrial hemp. The chief sponsor of H.R. 1009, the "Industrial Hemp Farming Act of 2007," is Representative Ron Paul (R-TX) and the nine original co-sponsors are Representatives Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), Barney Frank (D-MA), Raul Grijalva (D-AZ), Maurice Hinchey (D-NY), Dennis Kucinich (D-OH), Jim McDermott (D-WA), George Miller (D-CA), Pete Stark (D-CA) and Lynn Woolsey (D-CA). The bill may be viewed online at: http://www.votehemp.com/federal.html
"It is indefensible that the United States government prevents American farmers from growing this crop. The prohibition subsidizes farmers in countries from Canada to Romania by eliminating American competition and encourages jobs in industries such as food, auto parts and clothing that utilize industrial hemp to be located overseas instead of in the United States," said Dr. Paul. "By passing the Industrial Hemp Farming Act the House of Representatives can help American farmers and reduce the trade deficit - all without spending a single taxpayer dollar."

yeah, it's real easy to tax a plant you can grow in your living room. why do you think its illegal to begin with? because the government makes more money with it being illegal. they can use terrorist tactics to extort money for the failed war on drugs.
Not only should he leagalize hemp, he should legalize marijuana as well. The state and federal governments spend $40,000-$50,000 per year for every weed smoker they lock up. Legal marijuana would save us billions every year due to less incarceration. Also the government could tax it and raise even more revenue. I look at this issue as one of the keys to balancing the budget.

Thanks, I just wrote my Congressman to urge him to co-sponsor the Industrial Hemp Farming Act. Anyone who agrees with using industrial hemp should take 15 minutes out of their day to do the same.
