As much as I hate to say this, it's time for Obama to stop dithering on Afghanistan. The attack by the Taliban on the UN compound ... the above link ... it's worse than it has ever been. And that's in no small part due to president Cheney's dithering for 8 years. I keep saying to myself, man, too bad Afghanistan doesn't have oil, President Cheney would have had that place locked up in a year.
They need to start destroying poppy fields. That's a start, napalm those suckers ... that's how the Taliban is getting money to buy arms from Russia.
The drone attacks seem to be working pretty well. The ground hearts and minds war is an utter failure.
I have a friend who's ex was in microfinance and was working directly with poppy growers, giving them small loans to grow different crops. He was stalked and killed by the Taliban in 2006 ... it's truly ironic because pre-9-11, the Taliban took US money to NOT grow poppies. The Taliban is supposedly anti-drugs ... sigh.
