It's bound to happen with our disastrous monetary policy and spendthrift nature. You cannot spend insane amounts of money you don't have without any consequences. Healthcare spending will help speed up in this direction. A lot of people now want to point out the moral issue of providing healthcare, but that seems less important when the economy nose dives into national bankruptcy.

It's like a moth heading towards the bug zapper. "Pretty light, pretty light, pretty light...oh sh**!" They are currently only seeing pretty light though.

How about the moral issue of p^ssing away billions of $$$ on Iraq and other countries with NO return on investment while telling Americans to fend for themselves?

It could never happen. They would never allow it to happen. It would be a world wide disaster.
The dollar will never be allowed to collapse. The US dollar is the currency of the world and as such will always be the "currency of safety". For example ALL oil in the world is sold in US dollars. You want OIL? Don't show up with Pounds or Euros! If the dollar collapsed, what do you think would happen with world oil markets? That is why the world will NEVER allow such a thing to occur.

Unless some country turned out to take over the "economic rock of stability" position held up to the present by the United States. In that case, the dollar goes down the toilet and everyone races to make sure they've got a nice supply of...Chinese yuan, perhaps?
