Ever wonder why she didn't give a detailed interview for 3 weeks after her initial nomination? The McCain camp knew she was likely to blow up in their faces.
They had no choice, it was nominate Joe Liberman, who would have split the party and made the congressional and Senatorial beating worse, or pick a hard core righty that would breath life into the base.
McCain fell on his sword for the Republican party, and they ignore him for it.
