Palin, Limbaugh, Beck … now it’s Republicans seeing the downside

Some moderate conservatives see danger in the vociferous right, especially among broadcast pot-stirrers. They want to advance the GOP by changing the tone.

I hope it's a mere niche.

they're SHEEEEEP!

From the Brooks article...

In 2008, after McCain had won his nomination, Limbaugh turned his attention to the Democratic race. He commanded his followers to vote in the Democratic primaries for Hillary Clinton because “we need Barack Obama bloodied up politically.” Todd Donovan of Western Washington University has looked at data from 38 states and could find no strong evidence that significant numbers of people actually did what Limbaugh commanded. Rush blared the trumpets, but few of his Dittoheads advanced.

Over the years, I have asked many politicians what happens when Limbaugh and his colleagues attack. The story is always the same. Hundreds of calls come in. The receptionists are miserable. But the numbers back home do not move. There is no effect on the favorability rating or the re-election prospects. In the media world, he is a giant. In the real world, he’s not.

They had their perfect candidate in 2008, they had scores of pseudo moderates in 2006 and 2008 - guess what happened to them?

They lost trying to be dem-lites.

So much for that.

By "dem-lites" (which I see in the Googler is a trendy sheep-buzzword) do you mean candidates who might actually have been moderate enough to actually speak for the majority of the American people and win an election?

Except they didn't win.

It is!

I live in a very Republican area and I voted for McCain in the last election mainly because I thought he was more believable on the economy. But I know people who have voted Republican for the last 30-40-50 years who voted for Obama because of Palin and the "niche" she represents.

These shrill neo-cons are a real turn off for moderate Republicans like me.

Those 30-40-50 year Rs are represented by my surviving parent and *his* Republican area. They're bewildered and sickened by this gaggle of animals that has hijacked their party and they voted for Obama almost in a bloc.

niche - I dont know. I live in a very red part of the middle US and they're all insanely far right here, which is understandable I guess given the historic background and isolation of the area. Sometimes you cant see the forest for the trees though

The republican party has been swallowed whole by the extremists of their party. I firmly believe that Palin should break away from the traditional GOP and form her own conservative party. I really believe it would take root, as she has a very established media mouthpiece in Rush Limbaugh. She obviously has a very vocal support system who will flock to her rallies and open their pocketbooks.

That's such an interesting question. None of them has the stones to start a new party -- yet -- but clearly they're two parties fighting inside one body.
