In light of the many fire departments that requested grant money, I think they deserve to know that the money will be spent in an appropriate manner. This particular grant isn't new or unique to this year, according to the article. Last year, ACORN also received a sizeable portion of the money for this program. Since they did so, surely they can provide a report breaking down how the money was spent, and how they would similarly expend this year's funds.
I also do not think that Mr Vitter is the right person to evaluate whether the funds in the past were well-spent. His own personal record is not without blemish, and he is clearly partisan in his feelings about ACORN. If how Louisiana decides to aportion these monies is in question, then perhaps the decision-making body from another state would be better positioned to assess if ACORN has spent the money appropriately in the past, and if its plans for this money is appropriate as well.

I believe Homeland Security gives the grants. Not the state.
So I dont know that the state of Louisiana is in a position to either make the decision or stop the grant.
It just seems on its face to be a terrible thing that Acorn is getting money designated to firedepartments.
I will admit my bias, the only thing I think ACORN should get is a jail sentance.
Okay, this grant was awarded to the Acorn Institute, which is not ACORN, but is affiliated with Acorn.
They also received a substantial grant last year, so this is not a new thing.
But, what I would think would be alarming is that the money goes to the Institute, but evidently the Institute didn't spend last year's money to help people in Louisiana, and evidently wasn't intended to help people in Louisiana this year.
Im confused about this. The Washington Times article implies that firefighters now wont have enough money with which to fight fires etc., because money that should have gone to them was diverted to ACORN.
