Actually, the other thread is about BOTH, travel and the embargo. The travel restrictions are tied to the embargo. It's not really so much that the U.S. says you can't "travel" to Cuba, but that you cannot spend money in Cuba. You have to get a "license" from the Treasury Dept. in order to spend money in Cuba.....and only specified groups of people are given licenses to travel to Cuba by Treasury.......sooooo.

Anyway, there was discussion about lifting the embargo. If you look at the poll in that thread, you will see that there is an option about lifting the embargo (I think) as well as travel restrictions.

And, yes, indeed the politics regarding the embargo are very interesting. Especially at the state level in Florida......

Yes, the embargo we currently have on Cuba does more harm than good, and actually hurts the people of Cuba much more than the regime

I suspect the medical community would not be in favor of it. There's some good Doctors down there, some good medical care to be sought out.

I run to Tijuana for medical care. It would be beneficial to those living on the Eastern Seaboard or Florida to get some cheaper medical care closer to home.

We must always stop and think: if we do this, who are going to be the losers?

The tourism industry of Florida, for one. If you can enjoy a cheaper winter vacation in Cuba, why not!

It appears this Raoul dude might actually be kind of serious about reform. It will be interesting to see how things unfold in the next decade or so.

Anyway, I do believe the Cuban government has made an offer to return seized American assets. If that's true, and if they ever make good on it, there will no longer be any pretense for an embargo.

It is clear that the embargo hurts the people & not the regime.
However, lifting it unconditionally, would produce minor benefits for the peole & major stability for the regime...
