You have to remember this is the same state that kept re-electing the man who led the opposition against the Civil Rights act and the Voter Registration movement in Strom Thurmond. They kept him in office until 2003. And when faced with this fact, their residents will chime in with a weak excuse about how Strom "changed" Yeah right, he changed so much, he never acknowledged a daughter he had with an African American woman. Most states would be ashamed to keep a racist like Strom in office but not South Carolina.
Many South Carolinians are ashamed of Strom Thurmond, as well as the fact that the Confederate flag still flies on the Statehouse grounds. And because of the antics of so many of our Republican elected officials and Republican party officials, Democrats may be more successful in next year's Congressional elections (fingers crossed).
I know you think very little of South Carolina, but there are some wonderful and enlightened people here. Not everyone is a backwards, ignorant racist.

True, we cannot be hypocritical and paint a broad brush over all of SC.
Funny the more populated states have a higher number of crimes.
Come on - Percentages
I wouldn't have thought that would matter since the opinion seems to be that "southerners" are racists and the rest of the country isn't. That should trump population. However, here they are ranked by hate crime per capita (again, according to the FBI):
New Jersey: one per 11,610 people
Michigan: one per 15,839
Mass: one per 17,769
California: one per 26,109
Connecticut: one per 27,577
Illinois: one per 29,615
New York: one per 31,106
Minnesota: one per 33,100
Washington: one per 33,011
South Carolina: one per 34,706
Georgia: one per 52,353
Arkansas: one per 83, 793
Texas: one per 98,675
North Carolina: one per 98,957
Alabama: one per 398,066

I think you are in denial about the reality facing your state. South Carolina residents have defended Strom Thurmond by saying he changed his racist views and that he attracted a significant portion of the African American vote later in his term. They have also defended the Confederate flag by saying it doesn't represent racism but instead represents the culture and heritage of the Old South and that they shouldn't have to feel ashamed of that. I have a difficult time believing you are unaware of these arguments.
You are a self-acknowledged liberal Democrat in South Carolina which means you represent the minority not the majority there. Furthermore, I wouldn't be suprised to see more Republican success all accross the country due to disatisfaction with Obama and the poor economy.
No problem-- However It would be a small step for the state to lower the confederate flag over the Statehouse. Thats rediculous.
I think it needs to be pointed out that it has been removed from over the Statehouse and currently flies on a memorial, although it is on Statehouse grounds. I think it's a fair discussion, but think a more accurate discussion is whether that memorial belongs on Statehouse grounds versus a flag over the Statehouse, because that's not where it is.
Since the mid 1800's South Carolina has been infamous for its lunatic political classes.
LOL! You got that right.
