So while President Clinton was pushing for employers to cover their workers in his 1993 bill, John Chafee of Rhode Island, along with 20 other GOP senators and Rep. Bill Thomas of California, introduced legislation that instead featured an individual mandate. Four of those Republican co-sponsors — Hatch, Charles Grassley of Iowa, Robert Bennett of Utah and Christopher Bond of Missouri — remain in the Senate today.
The GOP's 1993 measure included some features Republicans still want Democrats to consider, including damage award caps for medical malpractice lawsuits.
But the summary of the Republican bill from the Clinton era and the Democratic bills that passed the House and Senate over the past few months are startlingly alike.
Beyond the requirement that everyone have insurance, both call for purchasing pools and standardized insurance plans. Both call for a ban on insurers denying coverage or raising premiums because a person has been sick in the past. Both even call for increased federal research into the effectiveness of medical treatments — something else that used to have strong bipartisan support, but that Republicans have been backing away from recently. Seems to be a lot of those these days. Maybe the Republican Party should split into the RINO's and The Teabaggers?
The point is that these centrists Republicans liked the idea when they proposed it in the 90's, but somehow think it's now "Socialism." How did an idea go from being Republican to being Socialist?

Gee Art, government mandates and government control has ALWAYS been socialistic. Alway has- always will be.
Conservatives want the federal government out of thier lives-
a. lower taxes
b. less regulations
c. fewer social programs
d. less government spending
Liberals want more government interference in thier lives
a. higher taxes
b. more federal regulations
c. more social programs
d. more government spending
The choice is obvious for any citizen who prizes personal freedom over government treats and handouts.

Were you looking for an answer such as:
Oh really? well since my masters were for it once, It must be ok, so I now approve!
Sorry, didn't approve then either.
Though the fact that you would think this is why we disapprove only hurts your position because it suggests that your views are due to the sheepish adherence of your party.

Um, I was referring to the politicians that proposed an idea at one point in time, but now say that idea is horrible - so horrible that its "socialism." Why did they propose Socialism back in the 90's? Shouldn't these guys be booted out of office by "real" conservatives. The teabaggers need to rid us of these RINO's! That's what primaries are for! Get rid of the socialists!
