Here in Wyoming, I own my home and lot, but the Union Pacific Railroad owns the mineral rights to my lot--goes back to when the railroad was first going through Wyoming in 1867 and the federal government was giving them extensive grants of land on either side of the railroad. Even though I'm a mile away from the actual tracks, the UP still retains the mineral rights under my home.

True. They just own the casino that sits on it.

Interesting. How close are you to a town? Do you have a well? I guess I mean, how do you get services?

I will never understand people's obsession with "my property". I grew up in the city, so that concept is pretty foreign.

Property tax is usually assessed at a rate commesurate with the services
offered by the taxing authority. I pay a pretty penny for the house here near Santa Fe even though I'm out in the sticks. They maintain the roads and provide a school system as well as police and fire service. We own a property near the Colorado border that we pay almost nothing on. I think it was less than $100 last year for a couple of acres. Good luck getting there in December if you don't have a snowmobile.

Buy a few thousand acres and incorporate it. Start your own city and start selling lots. Assess the owners zero.

I have Fee Simple (Absolute) Title to my property.

The County Treasurer is NOT a Lessee. They are a Lien holder, not dissimilar to a Mortgage Company.

The ONLY time the County can exercise their lien rights, and take action against my ownership rights is if, I do not pay my property taxes.

I have the right, without needing permission of any other party, to build on my property. To tear down any improvements I choose. I have the right to sell, lease or partially convey ownership in my property.

I'm in Laramie. The Union Pacific still owns mineral rights under all of the homes in the so-called tree area which is where I live.

Personally - I'm off the grid entirely. I have my own electricity (total solar), my own water, my own sewage disposal, my own fire protection.

Who says that they "want" to, though? And by the way, that would be a "group" that purportedly owns it, not any single individual.

How many still live on the "rez"?
