Once the candidates secured their nominations, it really took off. Seems like much of what happens today may be a bit of a carryover.

Honestly though, even if you read "respected" publications such as the NY Times or Washington Post, many of their regular columnist really name call too, just in a more "painted" manner.
It's what people do without a true leader whose words match their deeds. Only the devout (insert your party here) fall in line.

I'm with you, that's why I call myself a moderate. After being in business 30 years I understand what it takes to pay taxes and have income verses expenses so I am monetarily conservative.

Yet have a gay son, believe in Pro Choice and legalizing pot. Overall I'm conservative yet a liberal in many ways.

I would never vote for Obama, I see him as a socialist and maybe even anti-capitalism. I have just never seen an honest politician from Chicago and don't trust the guy

People are complex and very few all 100% one way.

I really don't like "progressive". Who is to decide what progressive is? But my real point is that I don't like hearing blnaket statements about groups of people such as "liberals (or whatever word you want to use) don't [work, have morals, pay taxes]", etc.

This post is exactly what I am talking about. I'm saying that neither "side" starts it, and I put "sides" in scare quotes precisely because there is more than one. If you start a post saying "hussein obama," or if I start a post calling the former president "shrub," then we are both contributing to the problem. It is fundamentally dishonest: if the goal of this thread particularly and this forum more generally is to advance public discourse and debate, then to start by insulting what we imagine our opposition to be is counterproductive. I just hate hypocrisy--I don't like it when people lie about what they are trying to do. That's why I try to be respectful, although I often fail. What I am trying to figure out is what motivates people who aren't even trying to be respectful. Why would they even post on a forum such as this? If you are not even trying to persuade people, then what is the point of making a post? No one is going to believe you except for the people who already agree. If the point is merely to blow off steam, then wouldn't you be better served by venting to your real friends?

When liberals do it, it shows that they are childish. When conservatives do it just to get back at liberals, it just makes them all the more immature. Nice if some conservatives can learn to take the higher ground instead of resorting to the same childishness that they denounced from liberals when Bush was president. "hussein obama" is a perfect illustration.

You think maybe it's because you're debating (arguing *laughs*) with a computer screen and not a person.... It kinda takes the human interaction out of it all. I can't imagine anyone I know espousing the stuff you see on here to someone's face.

Well I for one do not need a guidebook to tell me what to think or how to behave. I would have thought most coming to these boards do so because they feel passionately about what is is they believe, not because some group or the other has determined for them what those beliefs are or what their behavior should be.

Some of the most rewarding discussions for me have been with those who do not share my opinions, and I'm going to single out a few who have responded here, such as Chatteress and Huckleberry, and I have come away from those discussions learning something new, and still respecting their opinions. I also enjoy a good discussion with those whose opinions I agree with. It's all about exchange of ideas and opinions for me, not throwing a virtual grenade in the thread, and waiting for the explosion.

Good post, but save your breath about the "hussein obama" business. That poster thinks it's cute. She's not going to stop.

onservatives have taken the higher ground all along and all it has gotten them is sociatal(sp) decay. It's time we learn that you don't come to a gun fight armed with a knife. All conservatives are doing is going down to the level of left wingers to fight back on equal ground. We are learning...fast.
