Dec. 4 (Bloomberg) -- The 17,000 people visiting Denmark for global talks on reducing greenhouse gases will release as much carbon dioxide during the two-week event as about 200,000 U.S. passenger cars do in the period.
Environmental activists, government envoys, business leaders and journalists will emit 40,500 tons of the global- warming gas traveling to and within Copenhagen and for electricity and heat in their hotels and meeting rooms, according to an estimate by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, which oversees the talks. Denmark’s government says it intends to offset the gases.
Ok, now. HOW do you "offset" the gases? Do they have a scrubber that will miraculously clean the belching of poisonous, earth destroying Co2 (I hear plants really like the stuff )?

No, they will take a dip in the carbon credit market and buy some "credits".
That will make the world "all better".
You see if you emit carbon and then just buy credits TPTB in the world consider that "a wash".
How on earth anyone considers that saving us is beyond me. This is what they want to implement here in the US ? Am I missing something ?
snippet:
"The main problem for regulators is that countries that gobble up carbon credits could meet their emission requirements without actually reducing carbon output. Japan is a prime example of this concern; in the past fiscal year, Japanese countries purchased $1 billion worth of carbon credits and some have been “hot air” credits, as the surplus of credits is sometimes called."

Going green and global warming is nothing else than a business!
Just don't have lights on when you are not in the room and keep a track on your A?C or heater and the sprinklers...that saves your self money and also the environment...that should be enough if everybody would do that.

According to al gore, the best way to fight globala warming is buying and selling carbon credits.
Quote:
Mr Gore also threw his weight behind calls for a system of international carbon taxes in order to slash fossil-fuel consumption although he warned that huge political obstacles existed to this which meant that it would be many years before such a system could be applied globally.
He said that a system of carbon emissions trading was a more realistic first step on this path and rejected criticism from James Hansen, the pioneering climate change scientist at NASA, who has condemned both Mr Gore and the Copenhagen meeting for their focus on carbon markets as a solution to climate change.
do you get that? Buying and selling the planet's atmosphere, you know, the air that blows thru the trees.
Not that al Gore sits on the board of directors of a carbon trading company has anything to do with it.
Ms Jorgensen reckons that between her and her rivals the total number of limos in Copenhagen next week has already broken the 1,200 barrier.
The airport says it is expecting up to 140 extra private jets during the peak period alone
According to the organisers, the eleven-day conference, including the participants' travel, will create a total of 41,000 tonnes of "carbon dioxide equivalent", equal to the amount produced over the same period by a city the size of Middlesbrough.
What a bunch of hypocrites.
