I recently enjoyed a debate on this subject. As an American, I feel that it is my privilege and right to never have to bow, genuflect, or engage in proskynesis to any inherited sovereign out of "custom" or "protocol." In my opinion, the peerage system is vile.

Heck, I don't even like giving people automatic "special treatment" (like standing when a judge or the President walks in the room), and would rather like to have the to stand or show extraordinary respect only if I felt it was warranted. (Though for practical reasons I can rationalize my continue adherence to "extraordinary" respect for judges and the President as respect for a democratically elected "office" even if I don't think the "person" deserves it).

If you're American, would you bow or curtsy if you met the Queen of England (or any other "royalty" still left in the world)? If already a subject of a royal "realm," would you or do you bow?

If you aren't willing to follow a tradition and bow to a royal, why are you bothering to meet with him/her to begin with? It isn't as if you are a head of state or anything. Either follow the rules or stay home. It's that simple.

Only if I could do it like the 3 Musketeers do it. Give me the hat, the outfit, and a royal worthy of my respect, and I would gladly give them my best bow of honor. Out goes a leg, off comes the feathered hat, and I bow most graciously in my knickers, and Louie heels.

Yes I would, if I was meeting them in an official capacity. I wouldn't do it because I feel any particular reverence for them, but for the same reason I sit quietly when people pray; because it's respectful. And neither one hurts me. People who are disrespectful just for the sake of being disrespectful are weird.

If its the head of state of a nation I respect - England, the Netherlands, somebody like that, then yes. If it is some pissant third world monarch/dictator (i.e. House of Saud) then no.

If I was ever invited to personally meet the Queen? (It could happen? ) then yes, I would bow...As I am citizen of a Commonwealth realm and I would feel that it was the right thing to do. However, if it was for any other reason? Then no! As it's not like we have to Bow, Scrape and Grovel, everytime she comes for a Royal Visit.

well, we don't run in the same circles, for one thing. And unless they had reason to come to Home Depot in Bradenton...no, wait, I'm usually not there when the store is open.

That's crazy- I don't differentiate between any 'royalty', and I would bow to none. I'd be happy (maybe) to shake their hand. I don't answer to a monarch, andit's not my tradition.
