In Milwaukee, a bible banger has put up a very large sign of the ten commandments in front of his house.

The problem is: The sign is larger than permitted in a residential zone.
He must also have a permit for a sign that is in place for over a
certain period of time, which it has. He has no such permit.

The man refuses to take down the sign and refuses to get a permit for the sign.

It is a bit ironic that a man would disobey the laws that he posts!

A sign in front of a house that displays the 10 Commandments is causing a stir in Milwaukee.

Homeowner Ron Stanis says the sign has been in his yard for five years.

No one ever objected to the sign until this year when someone filed a formal complaint.

Officials told the homeowner he must apply for a permit or take down the sign.

Stanis says he won't do either and plans to protest against the city.

If he doesn't comply with the rules, he could be issued citations that would cost him more than $300.

I detest billboards. I'm also an Atheist.

BUT, It's his house and he should have the right. Last time I checked we had freedom of speech and freedom of religion; at least in theory.

The city has an ordinance against such large signs. Also a permit is required. It is not a matter of displaying the 10 commandments as it is that person's refusal to follow the law. He could put up a smaller sign and get a permit for it. Wouldn't that be the proper thing to do?

What one of the 10 commandments that he posted, did he break?

He certainly is not being a good example for his God. That qualifies for breaking the first.

Also, by not buying a permit, he is essentially stealing from the city.

I'm agnostic, so my knowledge on the issue is limited, but, didnt Jesus himself disobey Pontius Pilate and the Roman way?

Wouldnt the city be stealing from him by requiring a permit?

I wonder if the op would feel the same contempt for civil disobedience if the signage promoted gay marriage or an anti-war message?

If it's on his property and is not interfering with any sight problems (neighbors not being able to pull out of driveway safely) I think he should be allowed to do so. If he were in a gated community and signed a contract stating he wouldn't do such a thing it would be different IMO.

The city cannot charge you for freedom of speech..They'll lose this one.
