I've always wondered about this odd transference people have with public figures and how angry they get when someone speaks ill of their pet pundit or celebrity.

For example: if I were to say Glenn Beck is an irrational douche noggin.

How many of you would get angry?

What if I changed it from Glenn Beck to Nancy Pelosi?
Now?

Let's try a cut and paste mad-libs experiment to demonstrate, shall we?

[name of public figure or celebrity] is an ill informed, bloviating [mean name!] who is trying to [verb that means something that scares people!] with his/her [name a political/moral/philosophical/theological group] agenda. I would rather [describe something really degrading that you'd prefer not to do] than [watch/read/listen to] that crap!

If you know your history, you'll see that the [name a political/moral/philosophical/theological group that you like!] had it right all along when [random historic figure] said [just make something up and put it in quotes]. Which demonstrates our right to [verb].

I think it's human nature to want to protect our own kind, even when we know they're wrong.

I wish there was a laughing icon because this is just TOO FUNNY! And true. It's all the same heated argument with FILL IN THE BLANKS.

Perfect template for mindless arguers.

Haha. Don't get me wrong, I'm not claiming that I have always been above this kind of formula in the past myself, but, after a while, you just see a pattern, right?

I'm not even saying it's done by people with any particular point of view, it's all over the opinion spectrum.
