i know people who have had houses built from the ground up while making only 50,000 a year. cant try that in Nj,better keep dreaming.

EXACTLY and that is because businesses PAY more. If they paid what they pay someone in SC we would all be living on the street. I live in NJ I am well aware of what things cost which is why I am so against Obama's tax the "rich" people making $200,000 per year. In NJ that is NOT rich.

Great let's see your updated list. According to my link there was little change over the previous fifteen years.

When you say "controlled" are you speaking about the Governor because it is not the Governors it is the Senators and Congressman.

new jersey has not had a republican in the senate since 1979( Clifford Case who served from 1955 to 1979 (classII) and Howard smith 1944 to 1959 ClassI)

I think most people are missing the point of the original post. The question was why isn't the tax adjusted based on cost of living and income. Since 100k in NJ would be near a 50k salary in SC, the person making 50K in SC should pay the same proportional amount as the person who makes 100k in NJ. The answer? Taxes are already set and adjusted based on local cost living and income. The thing is, there are not a whole lot of top tier income earners in SC compared to NJ.

In 1986(?) most of the poor and lower income brackets were exempted from income taxes although these cuts may have been reversed in the 1990 and 1993 tax bills.. If those making below $30k are indeed exempt from income tax (or have low rates) it could verify why poorer states are simply not able to raise significant tax revenue without crippling themselves..

The problem is that this state is run by urban political machines and public employee unions who seem to think that suburban=rich people.

Look at the 100s of millions in so-called "aid to distressed areas" that has been blown through over the years with little to no accountability.

NJ will never elect a fiscal conservative as there are so many"tax receivers" per "tax payer".

Just make sure you have a well paying profession if you want to live here. That's what I did.
