1: The best way out of poverty for a poor single mother is marriage.
2: Many single mothers game the system and live better than unsubsidized working mothers by not marrying the father, going on the dole, and collecting generous handouts.

Depends on the father she chose. I would assume those that marry, marry the good ones.
Going on the dole doesn't elevate women and children out of poverty. Marrying a responsible father (or step fathers) can. Being on the dole is, however, better than being married to a deadbeat.
The flaw in your reasoning is assuming that all men will provide for their families equally. That is not the case so both statements are true.

Hmmm. They do seem like opposite sides of the coin.

Personally I don't see either statement as contradicting the other.
That said however, I'm not sure I agree with the slant either. I'm a single father with custody of my 2 daughters. It ain't easy and it ain't cheap and although I have recently improved my financial situation I don't see myself as financially privileged over many single mothers (I don't receive child support, maintenance or any other source of income other than plain old trading time for dollars - called a job for those a bit slow on the uptake)
I think it is a social myth that single mothers are somehow the forgotten demographic in our culture. There are tons of social programs as well as Not for Profit programs and organizations plus women support groups and religious organizations which cater to single mothers.
When you tell people you're a single father, after they finish staring at you like you have a horn growing out of your forehead - they treat you like there is something wrong with you or you must be a moron as a parent. I think it is hilarious how many times women will complement me on my girls behavior then immediately begin telling me how to raise them followed by telling me how promiscuous, reckless, dis-respectful and defiant their own children are.

go figure . . .
lols. I could see that.
I'm a single male with no kids and I live by myself. Women always ask me if I can cook and what I eat? lols. I usually reply "food." lols.

What needs reconciling? Both are true statements. Also, #1 should come before the child and maybe she would be better off.
