This is not a moment for government to be cutting back. … Right now we’re watching state governments try to balance all of their budgets at the same time in the middle of this crisis. We’ve seen half a million public sector jobs disappear.
Now, if these were good times, I would applaud that. We need to see a thinner public sector — especially at the state and local level. But we’re seeing what happens when you do that as an anti-recession measure and you make the recession worse. And even though we’re in a technical recovery, incomes and employment — all of that remains lagging for people — I think that we’ve rediscovered in this crisis something that I think we all knew.
Which is, there’s a reason why the people of the 1930s built some kind of minimum guarantee — unemployment insurance, health care coverage and things like that. And it’s not because they wanted to be nice. It’s because in a crisis when people lose their jobs, if there is no social safety net they loose 100 percent of their purchasing power.
In NJ they can't find any money to pay for all the services and government jobs , this making our property taxes are the highest in the nation.. I don't think it is a good time to spend what we don't have, our taxes are high enough .

According to Moody’s economist Mark Zandi (a campaign advisor to John McCain), the $61 billion in spending cuts proposed by the House GOP will cost the economy 700,000 jobs this year and next.
Once the government jobs are eliminated, do you believe your tax burden will be less? Do you believe your local economy will be better off without the government employees and vendors currently employed?

yes, We are getting a tax break this year.. it does work.. thanks Governor Christie!
we are in a rather tough situation right now. if this were 2009 again, and we needed a true stimulus package, and if it truly went to rebuilding and updating the infrastructure, i might agree with frum on this. however, right now we have record deficits, record debt, and both are growing, and we have excessive new regulations coming online from a variety of sources, the bond market is depressed, the stock market is fragile an inconsistent right now, and we are not creating new private sector jobs as a result. and now people want us to spend MORE money? we have a president that is trying to pay off contributors to his campaign under the guise of DOE loans to solar energy companies that have suspect financial situations, at least one of which has declared bankruptcy liquidation. no there is too much corruption in the executive and legislative branches of government to trust that these people would spend any money wisely.
it is time we tighten our belts and cut government spending, cut regulations, and let the private sector grow the economy to the point where we can afford to spend the money needed to repair the infrastructure.
government programs are not going to get us out of this recession, growing the private sector will.
Sorry, Frum stopped being a conservative a long, long time ago. Although the Left and media love to trot him out as the "voice" of conservatism.
He's a dem-light, a beltway elitist.

Frum is absolutely right. The hard-headed right-wingers don't seem to understand that if people don't have their basic needs met, they sure as hell won't have any money to spend. And when people get desperate, they tend to do desperate things. Is that really the kind of society you want?
