Why would you say such mean things about Taft? Today's Republicans are descendants of John Caldwell Calhoun.

I believe that many of today's "conservatives" would be in favor of "classical liberalism". Many people feel that "social liberalism" is at odds with individual liberties. Social liberalism introduces the idea of "social justice" (i.e. progressive taxation, income redistribution, property redistribution, etc).

Many "conservatives" are opposed to taking from one individual (by force) and giving to another individual - and view it as morally wrong. Conservatives tend to feel that the underprivileged should be helped by voluntary means (i.e. charity) rather than by forced income redistribution.

Conservatives also tend to share the believe that each individual has the power (to some degree) to better themselves. Social liberals tend to believe that your success is quite limited by your background, and hence the government is the only entity that can give everyone a "fair shot". John Rawls is often cited by proponents of the social liberal's viewpoint. The conservative viewpoint often cites the philosophies of Adam Smith, Thomas Jefferson, and Milton Friedman.

So... "conservatives" feel that "liberals" are evil because their viewpoints are at odds with their own values. They believe in charity rather than government programs. They do not believe in the "Robin Hood" philosophy of taking from the rich and giving to the poor. They tend to believe that the free market rewards the most productive, rather than the most hard working individual - and that's okay. It benefits all of us that people are rewarded for meeting the needs of society.

Both this^ and the title are merely opinions.
I'll tell you in a few words:

Conservative philosophy
hate + fear = prosperity

Then, why do conservatives support "rebuilding other nations"?
("taking from one individual by force and giving to another individual, rather than helping them by voluntary means, such as charities")

Some liberal ideas are good ones

1) protecting the environment
2) civil rights
3) gay rights

are 3 notable examples, but todays liberal uses hate and race as the means to achieve their power. Not many true liberals anymore in America

Eisenhower's Interstate Highway program brought the most prosperous decade in the 20th Century.

If both parties will cooperate and get behind Obama's ideas for developing alternative energy right away the U.S. might be able to give China a run for leadership in the 21st Century. New industry might replace the ones Wall Street wheeler-dealers have moved to foreign countries to yield more profit from slave labor.
My goodness...I love it when a new liberal comes to town and tries to make a cognizant point without even realizing that the core philosophy they espouse is the very reason for the Democratic demise over the past year.

Case in point: "Government tax money"

Those 3 words precisely sum up liberalism. The belief that it is the government's money to spend is the very problem I have with liberal ideology.

Total Fail.

All the good stuff that has happened in this country from the founding to the present has come from liberals.
Conservatives have almost always been on the wrong side of history, but because of the hierarchical way they see the world they look for leaders, and follow those leaders, whether they are Bush, or Limbaugh, or Palin, they need and follow and do what the leaders say.

They do not understand that liberals, simply do not see the world that way, that liberals have a globalistic rather than hierarchical view allows them to see possibilities, but also makes it much harder to unify for a goal.

Here are a couple things Conservatives got wrong
They were on the side of the Monarch in 1776
Opposed the Louisiana Purchase
Favored the invasion and dismemberment of Mexico in 1846
Supported slavery
Opposed the entry of the US into WW2
