Did you read the article? What makes you assume blacks have lower credit? The article states blacks who are in the same income bracket as whites... wouldn't you assume some form of education and reading is needed here.

Most likely we're dealing with educated whites..... can we say these blacks are also educated since income is mostly equivalent?

Who ever says that white privilege don't exist?

In the March 2010 issue Vanity Fair, there is an extensive writeup on the gang of low-life rich kids who systematically robbed a number of A-list celebrities in one of the most brazen and over-the-top crime sprees in Hollywood history. The question on everyone's mind? Why would these rich, and otherwise privileged young people commit such crimes?

Referred to as the Bling Ring, the culprits are accused of stealing clothing, jewelry, artwork, and memorabilia valued in excess of $3 million and are now facing multiple counts of felony robbery charges.

In reading the article, I can't help notice the light, unserious, and largely sympathetic tone of the author. It's as if she's trying to in some way justify these kids' deplorable actions, or atleast downplay them. Even though there is evidence which clearly proves their guilt, they are still seen as incapable of such a feat; the last ones we'd ever expect to commit such a monstrosity.

You see, these were, these are, the "good kids". The kind everyone turns a blind eye to because they expect another kind to commit all the crimes. And it is because of this very reality, that these kids often get away with a lot more, because people are so unwilling to ever consider them as capable.

Did I mention these kids were white?

Somehow, I just can't imagine such an apologetic writeup from Vanity Fair had the suspects been black. Hell, I doubt there would have been a writeup at all -- after all, how would that have been newsworthy? Everyone expects black youth to commit a disproportionate number of crime.

You see, this is how white privilege, which assumes and adheres to notions of white supremacy, operates. Because of this, in criminal cases, whites are given a free pass, assumed innocent, and even in the face of insurmountable evidence against them, often viewed more sympathetically.

Even though it was whites, and not blacks, who commited these crimes in some of the most exclusive neighborhoods of LA, they could walk down the street (with their stolen loots to boot) and not attract the slightest bit of attention. Yet, if a group of black kids walked down those very same streets, the cops would be there faster than white on rice.

White privilege enables whites to not think about their whiteness -- it's this kind of invisible shield that protects them from harrassment, from suspicion, and from negative stereotypes. And because of this, whites are not collectively seen as adhering to a set of ideals -- instead, whites are judged as individuals, while minorities, and blacks in particular, are pegged with the most unflattering of stereotypes.

So, regardless of how many groups of young white kids commit crimes like these, white kids in general will never be seen as "criminal".

According to the article, the group leader, Nick Prugo, has been charged with seven counts of burglary, carrying a sentence of two to six years each. Somehow, I just don't think he'll end up serving more than two or three.

I can only imagine, however, how much time he'd be looking at if he were black.

Lord help you if you've got Michigan plates driving through WV. The imported drug trade from detroit is ruinous to the state and they have limited means to control the tide of prescription drug abuse delivered to youth. The last attempt at bank robbery came from Alabama punks counting on southern hospitality to get by with nonsense. They were schooled.

I was greeted with a great deal of skepticism being an outsider with NY plates. That has everything to do with pre & post antebellum south BS abusing their unique culture for political nonsense. Worse yet, financial exploitation far beyond what was seen on any plantation in South Carolina. How is it possible that a state so wealthy in natural resources could remain perpetually impoverished? They rightfully distrust strangers because strangers are rarely orientated to appreciate a subtle culture. Ugly Americans often tramp over the bulbs planted. You will be shunned immediately for being so obtuse and insensitive.

Strangers look at menonites & amish as backwards, never acknowledging they put their lives on the line for their beliefs without imposing them on others. As it pertains to this thread, they're a far better example of how Americans need to be American than most in main stream chasing down others to be like themselves. Respect is woefully absent in main stream.

Like I said, I live in a city that is 57% black. So this whole "we're the oppressed minority" thing just isn't going to fly with me.

When you can explain a 16.5% gap for unemployment I'll listen.... honestly I don't think you can, you're just gonna spout "hard work" chants....

We can be at 50% in March and you'll say the same thing, you turn away from the elephant in the room much like you probably turn away from a group of young black men who walk in your direction.

Have a good day.

You assume way too much (which is your main problem). You don't know me.

It's not only about blacks being oppressed. We're talking about whites being privileged. That's just the way it is. Don't even matter if I think it's good or bad. It is just a fact.
It goes even beyond the US: Whites get treated better in a whole lot of countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America simply because they're white.

As for the article it seems as if they will be punished. On the "white privilege" and racisms and what not IMHO this is a case of "walk a mile in their shoes" white people likely don't notice the things that are happening around them as long as it is not happening to them or a group of their
friends/family, same with the black community. If roles were reversed and I were black, hispanic, asian or whatever for a day I may notice some difference in the treatment I recieve, my point is you don't know what someone else is going through until you have experienced it yourself
