I just finidhed reading it last night. I would like to apologize to all used car salesmen for ever thinking your profession was the slimiest of the bunch. Politicians are way beneath you in terms of character.
The author is the guy that worked for Edwards and took the blame for Rielle Hunter's (Edwards mistress) pregnancy. I know, I know you are all going to think this is going to be a Democrat post. It's not. It's about politicians and the people they surround themselves with. All I can say if you ever thought working for a politician is some glorified job, the things the guy did for Edwards was more like a glorified go-fer. All because he thought if he attached himself to the politician's star he could ride it all the way to the way to the White House.
Let me tell you, secretaries or whatever they're called now, used to think it was demeaning to fetch coffee and drop off dry cleaning? How about if you changed their kid's diaper or was responsible for plumbing problems in their house? How would you feel if their wife called you 10 times a day with every little demand? Like a teeny bopper and a rock star, this guy saw Edwards with stars in his eyes. The signs were all there that the candidate was a sleazeball but he ignored them. He was Enabler In Chief. All Edwards had to do was tell him he loved him like family and this guy swooned and stooped to every demeaning thing he was asked to do. There are no real winners in this book. Every single person in it, except all of the kids has a screw loose. There are details about where the money came from, too.
I want to mention, however, the other politicians mentioned, like John Kerry for example, are never demeaned for their policies. You know the assessment might be that they are wooden politicians or something like that but this book is not really about other politicians positions on issues. Stll, you have to wonder just who thought it was a good idea to put Edwards on the ticket. The author doesn't speculate. Everything he says is first hand knowledge.
This guy was a true believer as far as the Edwards political positions were. He just started to see through them when he finally realized his character was flawed and he went along with it anyway which to me says the author's character is flawed, too.
Sick stuff but an interesting read especially from the campaign aspects, behind the scenes stuff and of course the very very flawed characters.
Edwards is scum. Some people cannot see beyond their party line but I call it how it is. What a scumbag. I want to read this book. Seems like you enjoyed it though. Did you?

I agree with you. Seems we will never get rid of the SCUM in either party! There is enough to go around, in both parties. Scum is just that SCUM.
I saw Andrew Young interviewed and he said going along with Edwards was the worst mistake of his life. I believe this book probably gives common folk like us the first real glimpse of what our politicians are really like. It's a shame they've become such narcissists.
I didn't read the book but I've seen interviews of the author and his wife. It's hard to image that Edwards got as far up in politics as he did without getting exposed. His Enabler In Chief was just as worthy of the scum bag title as arrogant Edwards.
I remember watching an episode of The West Wing were they showed flashbacks of how all the main players ended up in the White House. It's exactly right about how they hitched themselves to a "rising star" and then reaped the benefits if they gambled correctly. It's crazy when you think about why and how people are in positions of power....just a lucky roll of the dice and not much more.

I saw the interview on 60 Minutes. Wow.
He is a lowlife. And, his new wife is really something.
I held my nose and closed my eyes when I voted for Kerry / Edwards in 04. Never trusted Edwards - knew he was a scam from the beginning.
Glad he's finally outed. From people like Palin to Edwards, the depth of vacuous narcissism with nothing to back it up is astounding at that level of politics.
When he first appeared on the national stage, many thought he would make a great candidate given his resume, his movie star looks and perfect hair. Then, he opened his mouth. He was interviewed on his opinions on foreign affairs. He was a deer, completely lost in the headlights. He gave a worse interview on the subject than Sarah Palin!

It was illuminating. I did enjoy it. I like Behind the Scenes type nonfiction. I'm always curious about what aides do for politicians. Now I know.
