For too long now, fire departments across the United States have been SOCIALIST organizations, resulting in TAXES on the American people.
FACT: Most Americans never use the socialized services of the fire department. We have the best fire departments in the world in the US, but that doesn't mean that anyone (even non-US citizens) should be able to dial up and have fires put out, etc. There are private companies (Halliburtion, Etc.) who could step in tomorrow and take over every fire... People who want to shut down their local FD's are stupid; from the "cut off your nose to spite your face" type of stupid. Dummies.
Once it takes longer to respond to fires, insurance companies raise the risk levels for properties in those cities, both homes and businesses. When the level of risk goes up these idiots will pay more for homeowner's insurance. Dummies.
Pay now or pay later; but pay they will. Ain't no free lunch and saving money on the FD means you pay more elsewhere. Dummies.

I wonder if we'll see movements in cities and states to get rid of public fire departments.
Private fire companies, like private waste management, would be better and more efficient. Remember when cities were in charge of trash collection and disposal? One pays for fire department services in the form of local taxes. However, I am sure that a more efficient, lower cost system could be arranged privately.
Ever been to a fire station or knew any fireman? Most of the time, they are doing absolutely nothing. It is a good gig for the firemen, but not the best deal for those paying for the salaries and equipment.

Oh, you are so right, the difference between picking up a bag of garbage and throwing it in the back of a truck and going into a burning building are such a similar skill set!
Does anyone favoring this understand the rationale for why cities like Philadelphia and New York abandoned "private" fire departments in the mid 19th Century?
