BEIJING (AP) - China plans to bid for contracts to build U.S. high-speed train lines and is stepping up exports of rail technology to Europe and Latin America, a government official said Saturday.

China has built 4,000 miles (6,500 kilometers) of high-speed rail for its own train system and President Barack Obama issued a pledge in November with his Chinese counterpart, Hu Jintao, to cooperate in developing the technology.

"We are organizing relevant companies to participate in bidding for U.S. high-speed railways," Wang Zhiguo, a deputy railways minister, told a news conference.

Wang gave no details of where China's railway builders might seek contracts, but systems are planned in California, Florida and Illinois. He said state-owned Chinese companies already are building high-speed lines in Turkey and Venezuela.

You should realize that US companies are allowed to bid, too. Stop being alarmist and welcome the competition. It keeps our side on its toes.

The Chinese have an advantage. They actually build such trains and will soon have more miles of such high speed train routes than France, Japan and Germany combined. What have US companies done except PR releases?

So, what is the safety record of the Chinese high-speed trains already in use in China? I would have greater trust in Japanese trains frankly. They are not made by Toyota, are they? ^^

The train in the first video looks just like the German ICE train and I guess the Chinese did have a kind of partnership with Germany at one time.

We need that here. Maybe they will build it and we can buy it at Wal-Mart extra cheap. I couldn't vouch for the quality though.

Would Americans use such trains even if they existed?

People in higher densely populated areas of the country would use them. They would be quite competitive on trips of 600 or less miles if they were downtown to downtown because it would take as much time to fly that far.
