Washington (CNN) -- President Obama announced Saturday that he will make recess appointments of 15 nominees to administration posts who are awaiting confirmation by the full Senate.

"The United States Senate has the responsibility to approve or disapprove of my nominees," Obama said in a written statement that also named the 15 individuals. "But if, in the interest of scoring political points, Republicans in the Senate refuse to exercise that responsibility, I must act in the interest of the American people and exercise my authority to fill these positions on an interim basis.

Both Republican and Democratic presidents have made recess appointments, which circumvents the Senate's authority to confirm nominees, when they could not overcome delays. President George W. Bush made more than 170 such appointments in his two-term presidency. President Bill Clinton made nearly 140.

If Bush could do it, why do you have an issue here then?

This is what the nominating process has come down to. So petty has the politics become that a president is forced into recess appointments.

Thank you liberals and conservatives...

... you extremists are the cause of the demise of government and society in general, IMO. You all need to scurry away and let the middle majority fix what you all have chewed up.

There is a bit of a problem there, it seems the whole GOP contingent in Congress, is extremist. Therein, lies the rub.

I have a problem with Obama doing this.

WHY IS HE ONLY APPOINTING 15?!!!!

He should appoint the lot of open positions, and let the Republican's wallow in their shame. Come what may.

Now class.

Let's do the math.

15 in one year X 8 = 120

That tallies to 50 less than Bush, on average, and 20 less than Clinton.

If there's an issue here I'm not seeing it.

Republicans, hypocrites le extradinaire. Ok for me, not ok for you. Sounds like my wife.

Another short cut to avoid the vetting. I giuess after the flubs he has appointed starting with treasury having a income tax evader ;it might be the only way he can fill the positions.I mean when your socail secretary has to quite that is getting bad on picks.
