On the news, Florida's strawberry farmers were shown destroying their crops.

Of course, the lame stream media failed to report the whole situation.
And they certainly took the opportunity to blame 'greed'.

No one mentioned that due to the price drop, the farmers would have to pay more to harvest and sell them, than to let them rot.

That's like going to work, and the boss telling you that not only are you not getting paid, you have to pay him, to work for nothing.

If you packed up and headed home, would you be "greedy"?

Just drove from San Fran to Carmel last week and couldn't help but notice that only half of the strawberries were even planted. We got out to look and the strawberries that were planted looked good, so it could not be a disease/insect problem.

Artichokes seemed to be full bore- no land not planted.

Since you're posting in the "Politics and Other Controversies" forum I assume you have some point, beyond just posting an anecdote about strawberry farmers. Without either a link to your source or some commentary from you, though, you're not making this point.

What are the politics? What is the controversy? What is your point?

The point is that decisions based on economics are twisted by the mass media to make a political point, and accuse the farmers of greed.
There was a subtle undercurrent of "let's get the government to DO SOMETHING about this."

Several interviews of diners in soup kitchens, denouncing the farmers weren't "fair and balanced" in the least.

To add insult to injury, farmers were unwilling to let strangers harvest the discards, because of past lawsuits for injuries.

Unlike the previous posters' on this thread, I did see the article you're referring to. It's very unfortunate to have to plow under perfectly edible food.

But you want to know what galls me the most? Most of those farmers that plowed under the excess strawberries did so because Greedy Lawyers jumped at the chance to cry foul over "Pick It Yourself" operations that generally would take care of the excess berries. In other words, someone sued over something while they opted to come pick their own berries, so instead of opening up the fields to "Pick It Yourself," they opted to plow the berries under. The liability was just not worth it. This is the America we have become.

Things like this make me fear for America. It's shameful.

This IS THE FREE MARKET at work. But of course, liberals hate the free market. That is why California had skyrocketing electrical bills a few years ago and PG&E went belly up- too much regulaton and no free market. And the first to complain were the liberals who enacted the policies that created the disaster. It will be the same with healthcare.

They were dumping milk up in Maine for the same economic reason.
Do you know why beef is so cheap ? Dairy cows gone to slaughter, that's why.

Folk don't realize..if it costs you more to grow and harvest than what you get back then it does not pay to operate at a loss. It's more economical to let the crops die in the field, dump the milk, whatever to keep your losses at a minimum.

Symbolic Milk Dump Planned as Tidal Wave of Milk from Factory Dairies Drowns Family Farmers

Same happening to corn and poultry and swine.
Most folks don't follow Ag news though so it's not until you see headlines in MSM that you all get upset.
