A true Libertarian wants to protect the rights of all, not just business owners. They don't have a problem with businesses banning minorities from their products. They don't have a problem with States banning abortion, often stating that it's a state issue. They don't have a problem with states banning gay marriage. What they do have a problem is with any type of regulation on business. Let's call it what it is, Laissez-faire Capitalism. To be fair, very few people are true Libertarian, except maybe the ACLU, and even they don't take a firm stand on the 2nd Amendment.

The Pauls (both Ron and Rand) are traditional conservatives (sometimes called paleoconservative). They exhibit almost all of the characteristics. Isolationist, small government zealots.

The hawkish, "we believe in small government (when a Democrat is in office)" neo-cons have hijacked the word conservative to the point where anyone who thinks there are ways of solving international issues without predator drones is seen as non-conservative.

Rand's positions are pretty consistent with other traditional conservatives like Pat Buchanan.

With confusing & mixed messages, racist overtones, and basically long on "outrage", but short on solutions..... Rand Paul is quickly becoming the "poster child" for everything that's been wrong with the "Tea Partiers".

These new "libertarians" aren't libertarians at all. They're just refugee rightwingers too embarassed to admit they supported Bush.

Seems their attitudes towards business allows 5000 gallons of oil to be pouring into the gulf of Mexico daily. They want to eliminate regulation and let the businesses have at. assuming they will take care of what's important or we can not buy their products... what a worthless stance that will never work. It would be a bigger failure than communism.

You are being very, very kind to Rand Paul.

Pure Libertarianism, as defined by the Libertarian Party is hell on earth.

Yep, this.

It pissed me off how people ran with the "OMG He's racist!!!!"

No. What he was saying was, private corporations and groups should be allowed to refuse or restrict service to whoever they want. I disagree, and I consider myself somewhat of a small l libertarian (but moreso a moderate), but I can see where he's coming from. And it was 100% a VERY libertarian belief.

Libertarians can't be racist, sexist, homophobic, or any kind of ist. If they are, then they cannot call themselves a libertarian. It violates the core libertarian belief that people should be individuals without any other external labels- everybody should have rights as INDIVIDUALS not GROUPS. Which is why you have minority libertarians who oppose hate crimes and affirmative action. They believe that you shouldn't be called "an African-American" or "Christian" in the eyes of the law, that's considered a form of governmental classification or label.

I would say that Rand Paul practices Libertarian "light". Although he may be a true Libertarian, to actually espouse true Libertarian ideas seems to cause Republicans AND Democrats to start frothing at the mouth. One comment about the Civil Rights Act has already shown that. Basically, Libertarians agree with liberal Dems on social issues and conservative Repubs on financial issues and the role of the Federal government. The result is schizophrenic reactions from both sides.
