The stimulus is an abstract. It looks good in flashy icons on news reports and blaze orange signs on the side of the road, but the truth of the matter is that most Americans' hardly know that there even was a stimulus. When they went to the unemployment office, they didn't go because the stimulus helped fund their unemployment checks, they went because the unemployment mechanism was in place for them to use. That's it. When people drive across a repaired bridge, they don't drive across it because it was funded by stimulus dollars, but because they expected that a bridge would be there to get them to the other side. That's it. In other words, there's hardly any tangible proof that a stimulus was ever passed. The stimulus was used to support what people already assumed was available to them. It's all an abstract. And that's the reason the stimulus will be a liability come election time.

This is a disaster.
How long do you suspect the Fed can last loaning money with each new extension and each new wave of "unexpected" high numbers of unemployed ?

We're at it for over 1 year now.

One can't complain about jobless benefits drying up while doing everything (and the kitchen sink) to filibuster to prevent the bills from being seen, or screaming ones heart out how evil government handouts are.

Some one has been taking their crazy pills this morning, double dose too.

It goes beyond what Congress can do. If people don't have jobs, they aren't paying taxes, the state treasuries will be in the red, they will be unable to meet their obligations.

Didn't the democrats pass and obama sign a pay-go law? Surely, they can find the funds from the unspent, ineffective Failed Stimulus.

Band-aids never work on arterial bleeds. I think the gov. is just funding unemployment extentions so that people don't riot in the streets the way they are doing in Greece. Mini-stimulus 2, a.k.a the JOBS bill passed just last month, was supposed to take care of this, IIRC.

The other 800 lb gorilla in the room are the numerous states' pensions that are underfunded and a bunch of baby boomer state employees that are nearing retirement age.
We live in interesting times that are about to get much, much more interesting.

Great post, as usual.

Can we say that we are on the slippery slope?

Exactly what was said above, you wanted HOPE AND CHANGE, Got YOUR WISH, AND IT AIN'T NO PICNIC THIS NEW CHANGE, things are going to get drastically worse, if any one thinks things are looking up, you don't live in the U.S. any more. The economy is going down hill and fast, and don't appear to be getting better any time soon, Thanks for the Hope Obama, the hope, that we once again want to see employment rise along with our booming economy. Oh yeah that was in my dream?
