In response to Spirit Airlines saying last week they will start charging $45 for carry on bags NY Senator Chuck Schumer along with five other lawmakers has introduced legislation to ban airlines from charging for carry on items. New York Congressman Tim Bishop (D-Southampton) is also introducing the same legislation in the House.

Schumer (D-N.Y.) filed the legislation in response to an announcement last week by Spirit Airlines that it would start charging customers $45 per bag - beginning with the first piece of luggage. He said he was concerned that other airlines would do the same.
Sad day in our republic when legislators are bothering with this. Use another airline. Heck, SouthWest's entire business model recently revolves around not charging for checked in baggage. Morons in DC.

The nickel and dime crap by the industry needs to stop. The reason this was proposed was due to the possibility of other airliners jumping on and doing the same thing. The rip offs need to stop.

Southwest never "jumped on" with regards to checked in luggage.
All these fees are doing is hiding costs. Inflation is here and has been for some time. It's all a part of the scam of trying to make us believe that our money isn't worth less. Airlines continue to lose money and it's not because of top heavy management. CEOs and Senior mgmt in airlines make far less than many other industries. I think many CEOs in this industry make less than $1M per year and at least one took a $1 salary while they were losing money.
Supply and demand, simple 101 economics. Rogue airlines will not comply if they see profitability in allowing carry-ons for free.

Don't like it , use another airline. Remember People's Express? We don't need that gasbag Schumer to do for us what we can do for ourselves. This just goes to show Schumer really thinks we are a bunch of idiots.

Yes, but Southwest isn't everywhere. In some areas people have no other option but to use airlines that charge for baggage.
