Yes, there are many Christians in the country, however this not a 'Chritian Nation.' The Treaty of Tripoli was signed by our country's first conservative president - John Adams.

It isn't founded on the Christian "religion", but that of Christian tradition.
They were explaining to the Barbary nations that they were not a nation founded and driven by the church, that which was in great contest in the past. they wanted them to be clear that they would not pursue religious driven mandates which would result in conflict with those nations, that they were not like England and Spain.
