Yes, there are many Christians in the country, however this not a 'Chritian Nation.' The Treaty of Tripoli was signed by our country's first conservative president - John Adams.

Quote:
Art. 11. As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion; as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquillity, of Mussulmen; and, as the said States never entered into any war, or act of hostility against any Mahometan nation, it is declared by the parties, that no pretext arising from religious opinions, shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries.

US Treaty with Tripoli, 1796-1797

It isn't founded on the Christian "religion", but that of Christian tradition.

They were explaining to the Barbary nations that they were not a nation founded and driven by the church, that which was in great contest in the past. they wanted them to be clear that they would not pursue religious driven mandates which would result in conflict with those nations, that they were not like England and Spain.
