Hey,
The US is number 1.

The US is right up there with teenage births.

The United States has the highest teen pregnancy rate in the industrialized world. The Center for Disease control says that one-third of girls get pregnant before the age of 20.

Go Team USA.

I do believe that a woman should be able to use her vacation or sick time or to get an unpaid leave of absence for up to a year before and after having a baby.

If a woman has a baby then there should be a man around someplace so it should not be a major hardship if she has to go without pay for awhile. Now rather or not the employer can keep her job open for her is another thing too.
Why should there be a man around someplace?
A lot of men run off at the first mention of pregnant.

This isn't the mid-1900s any more.

The 6 month leave came from a survey, not a study, and we have no idea how the question was asked. If women had to pick from, say, three options, and 6 months was the longest option, no wonder that was the most common answer. I'm not saying it happened like that, just giving an example. The FMLA allows 12 weeks (roughly 3 months) for childbirth, w/o pay if you don't have time accrued. There are no proposals to increase that time.
