I believe that many of our elected representatives vote against popular opinion because they know more about complex issues than us. It may sound arrogant but it is true. The average person is easily manipulated by slogans and emotional arguments. They also do not understand complex issues.

Members of Congress, in many cases, have more education and the ability to understand complex issues due to, intellectual abilities, contact with the experts and travel to the affected areas, like Iraq.

Do you accept the fact that our leaders will vote against public opinion because they know what is best for America more than the voters?

Not even close.
Our 'elected'(?) officials vote based on
financial issues and self preservation only.
Politics is welfare at its worst. Once you're in
you really dont have anything to do or worry about.
It takes a special person to expect pay for assuming
they know whats better for people they dont even know
than those people do for themselves and forcing that
on them, en masse.
The American political system is just another
Corporation. I believe any average small business
owner, high school honors student or motivated person
who possess's any modicum of decency could do a better
job than whats going on now. If I did my job as poorly and lied
as much as pols do, Id be panhandling and pickpocketing on a
streetcorner somewhere.

HELL NO! NO! NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!
GOOD GRIEF NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Unless you qualify the stat sheets handed to them by "objective" lobbyists and special interests as making a politician an expert on safety, cost, crime, labor, economics, insurance, solar energy, Amtrack, agriculture, aviation, guns.........(infinite!) then hereby, I would have to bestow 43-year veteran Ted Kennedy as the nation's afficiando: well-rounded to the point of putting Aristotle to shame. Ted *%$# Kennedy! If I felt any politician knew more than me about everything and anything, I'd move to western Europe.
Arrgh. Now I'm really riled.

NO!

Our elected officials are just as human as anyone else and they will vote on emotion just as soon as facts. Witness the debate over "Did you read the Iraq Intelligence estimate?". The thing is over 900 pages long! When was the last time any of you forced yourselves to read 900 pages of pure governmentese? Besides doing so might interfere with meetings with corporate lobbyists and other more important things like getting enough funds to get reelected.

Angry enough to petition the citizenry that we just as well should create an anarchist state!

I disagree with everyone. Sure there are some Senators who make bad decisions based on influence from money and fancy lobbyists. But in general I suspect many of them know the average citizen is not so bright and make decisions based on emotion and just a little knowledge of complex issues. A good Congressman makes decisions on what is right, not what people say they believe.

First off, do you believe that the average person knows enough about the complex issues of the day to make a really informed decision?

Wow....You have fallen for it hook, line and sinker !!
Whatever happened to elected government representing the people ?
Sorry, these people dont represent me or what I believe in any way.....
And, WTF do you mean when you say "I suspect many of them know
the average citizen is not so bright" ?? Why is a 'good' congessmans
opinion any more worthwhile than mine or anyone elses ?
Looking at what a mess this country is right now would show how
arrogant and ridiculous this statement is. There is no reasonable intellected
and rational person in any state or city that could not do a better job
than what I see in power currently.

With all the "slippery-slope" situations I can imagine combined together for maximum effect, I could not come up with a comparison to how dangerous what you suggest would be for the American people.

Can you not see the directness of the route to tyranny from such an attitude? Government officials doing what they pleased because they knew better than the people what the people want? Modern-day feudalism would be unstoppable.

Congressmen/women are not more intelligent that anybody else - they just have more money and are good at kissing babies. They don't vote based on what is right -they vote based on whatever pork they can include as amendments in whatever bill is being discussed to ensure they win reelection back home and keep the gravy train going. For the most part they do not even bother to attend congressional sessions anymore. Most of the public gets this - this is why congressional approval ratings are lower than Bush's...which is making a statement.
