GM, auto industry look to Volt for a recharge - Autos- msnbc.com

"Initially, the Volt will be available only in Michigan, California and Washington, D.C. GM won't reveal the price tag, though it's expected to be about $35,000 — not taking into account a $7,500 tax credit.
What will this buy?
A complex machine of more than 18,000 parts, none probably more important than the 400-pound, T-shaped lithium ion battery. It will give the car a range of up to 40 miles on one charge."

I guess we can kiss $68 billion good bye!

US needs to invest in electric cars, to reduce its reliance on oil ! I think it's rather a good use.

GM needs to be profitable to pay us back. This isn't the way.

No, the US doesn't, but consumers can if they so choose.

Why are some so afraid of anything new and different? This is why China is waving us by-by as far the future is concerned. They don't waste time clinging to what's old and torn. They create new more innovative things and their people embrace them.

Reduce reliance on oil = good.
Electric car = bad.

Reason: NO battery powered electric car will ever operate at its rated range, because the instant you use ANY other device, you will drain the battery.
Turn on the brake lights, turn signals, fan, A/C, power windows, radio, sound system, headlights, windshield wipers, or the heater, and you drain the battery faster.

HOWEVER...
If overhead catenary power feeds were built for electric trolley buses, trucks, and other vehicles, an electric powered automobile might be viable... if it could tap into the municipal power while in transit.

You jest!

China adopted America's superhighway system, almost completely.

Which dooms them to repeat America's mistake in embracing the automobile, at the expense of electric traction mass transit.

Hey I would would cheer Fred Flintstone brakes if I thought they could get us our $68 billion back. I don't think a battery with a 40 mile range is the ticket!

In typical conservative fashion, you say NO but have NO alternative. Conservatives are very consistent.

From the story is states that the Volt goes 40 miles and the gas engine kicks on,so it is still belching carbon but on a lesser scale. The car is not made for long trips of over 6 hours and then you need a charge. With that in mind the buyers are getting a 7,500 tax credit putting in the range of other vehicles.Don't you just love the free market?
