what does our Pres being black have to do with this? Talk about racist and playing the card, boy you sure did it this time..

I will add, for all of you libs, I don't care what party we are talking about, from what I hear, read and discuss with friends, welfare is not the main concern most have. The oil spill, illegals, terrorism, yes, the unemployment rate and the deficit are much higher on most peoples minds then how many are on welfare.

That is so completely disingenuous it's laughable.

It's hard to have a discussion with someone who modifies the facts to fit their outlook.

So why all the screaming from the right? It is that welfare recipients, like illegal aliens are simply another convenient scapegoat for the right to inflame middle class, traditionally democratic voters?

At the same time, government-provided benefits — from Social Security, unemployment insurance, food stamps and other programs — rose to a record high during the first three months of 2010.

Well so much for this thread about how republicans are just over reacting. Making things up crying like a bunch of babies.

I am sure they'll be a new excuse.

So now the right wing considers Social Security and Unemployment Insurance-- Both of which are paid into before benefits are received-- welfare!?!?!!? PLEASE: Make this part of your platform on the next election cycle!

Regarding food stamps-- Pretty good program. Limited abusive opportunities, because, in the end, the benefits buy FOOD. Yes there is SOME abuse, but, overwhelming the benefit feeds single mothers and their children. If you'd rather let them starve, then you really need to have your heart examined.

Honestly, I think it's scary that welfare rolls are dropping at a time when unemployment is spiking, stagnant or has only dropped 1% since the last figures came out. What are these people doing to survive?

People where i live get SSI [welfare reform]and they never worked to pay into it but recieve benefits while they breed more of the same with different fathers. They are generational welfare which is the same as prisoners that are institutionalized... 3 squares a day... easier to be taken care of on the inside than to live in the world outside. SS eats up a large chunk of the budget and the government takes all that SS tax money and pays their bills with it they aren't saving it for you they are spending it now.SS should be for working people and what it was originally intended widows orphans and the mentally ill but morphed into this big social justice ponzi program. When i was laid off railroad unemployment sucked $600.00 a month that was TAXED [and hasn't improved much] you couldn't pay your bills let alone eat and when i applied for foodstamps they said i had to much material wealth? Hell you can't eat your car or home while those on the program traded their stamps for cold hard cash to buy their smokes, beer, drugs and tattoos...so much for feeding their kids.People should demand Health Savings Accounts with a fair return for their money and stop this pay as you go government ponzi scheme...its your money do what you want to do with it! Reform Social Security

Let's put this argument to rest, because it is total bs.

Even accounting for the increase in the retirement age population those receiving SSI has increased by only 284,570 from 1998 to 2008.

SSI Annual Statistical Report, 2008 - Recipients of Social Security, SSI, or Both

The number of children receiving Social Security and SSI went from 271,690 in 2001 to 290,269 in 2008, an increasing in "breeding" of 18,579!

Whose dumbing down now?

Maybe it's because the screamers want to abolish all forms of public assistance.
