Well if it was left up to the Democrats... YOU will...

House to consider raising 8-cent oil tax to 32 cents - May. 24, 2010

They suggest instead of taking BP's profits and assets to pay for the oil spill fix and clean up... they want to increase the tax that YOU pay... I knew it from the beginning... They weren't going to make BP pay for it... I said it at the beginning, the government was just going to do some grandstanding with fake outrage and the liberals decided instead of making BP pay for it, they were going to make you pay for it with higher taxes...

BP said they would clean it up. They are paying lost wages to fishermen, tourism owners, and many others along the LA coast.

Plus the oil companies have been paying into a fund established by the government for cleanups and that fund is now $1.6 billion.

I'd like to know why this "extra" tax over and above what they already have.

But we all know..no one will ask the question

Presumably Obama?

At least that's what 'fiscally conservative' mensch keep telling me. Because rich lawyers who are elected president are obviously always dyed-in-the-wool "socialists". They obviously despise capitalism.

If your faucet in the kitchen busted, would you:

A.) Open the cabinet and turn off the supply line valve

B.) call a plumber, while water runs everywhere?

C.) call the plumber that installed the faucet for him to tell you it is the faucet manufacturers fault, while water runs everywhere.

D.) Stick your finger in it hoping and praying it will quit.

E.) Drink a 12 pack of beer and go to bed, while water runs everywhere.

There could be multiple answers to this question, if you work for the Government.

I thought that fund was from the current 8/cents a gallon consumers pay?

No, this fund was established after the Exxon Valdez..well before but the Exxon Valdez kicked them hard enough into action on it.
The liability limit was set and in return, all the oil companies contributed money to it. Like an insurance pool so no one company would get the full brunt of a cleanup bill.

Whatever taxes we pay do not go into that fund. Now the oil companies may be passing that on to us..but we don't pay into it directly.

The Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund (OSLTF)

The Principal Fund of the OSLTF has several recurring and nonrecurring sources of revenue.
  • Barrel Tax. The largest source of revenue has been a 5-cent-per-barrel tax, collected from the oil industry on petroleum produced in or imported to the United States. The tax was suspended in July 1993 because the Fund reached its statutory limit. It was reinstated in July 1994, when the balance declined below $1 billion, but expired at the end of 1994 because of the sunset provision in the law. The 2005 Energy Policy Act again reinstated the tax (effective April 2006).
  • Transfers. A second major source of revenue has been transfers from other existing pollution funds listed above. Total transfers into the Fund since 1990 have exceeded $550 million. No additional funds remain to be transferred to the OSLTF.
  • Interest. A recurring source of OSLTF revenue is the interest on the Fund principal from U.S. Treasury investments. As a result of historically low interest rates, interest income declined in 2003 and 2004, but has rebounded in recent years as Treasury rates have risen with the economic recovery. The Department of the Treasury serves as the OSLTF’s investment manager.
  • Cost Recoveries. Another source is cost recoveries from responsible parties (RPs); those responsible for oil incidents are liable for costs and damages. NPFC bills RPs to recover costs expended by the Fund. As these monies are recovered, they are deposited into the Fund.
  • Penalties. In addition to paying for clean-up costs, RPs may incur fines and civil penalties under OPA, the Federal Water Pollution Control Act, the Deepwater Port Act, and the Trans-Alaska Pipeline Authorization Act. Penalty deposits into the OSLTF are generally between $4 million and $7 million per year.

Nothing more than Democrats looking to find yet another way to steal more money from you and I to satisfy their spending appetite.
